  • Connecting Wi-Fi printers to GrapheneOS

I have tried every method I can think of to get my Epson & HP printers to connect to GrapheneOS with no luck. I installed the manufacturer's apps, etc. It seems that GrapheneOS cannot find either printer on Wi-Fi. It is the only device that has trouble connecting: Windows 10 , Linux, iPhone, iPad all connect and print successfully. Hope you can help.

Ok, I found out what is causing the problem of no printers available/listed. I had loaded and started ProtonVPN from F-droid and as soon I did, i began to have this problem: no Wi-Fi printers. When I removed the VPN via the F-droid store, all of the printers showed up.

I should have known better. I ran in to the same problem on my Linux POP_OS computer. Except, I found that all I had to do is "Disconnect" it on the Linux and it would print fine. That didn't work on GrapheneOS. It had to be totally removed before it would work. Apparently, a VPN typically blocks off the "ports," to other devices including printers.

I had lengthy discussions with ProtonVPN and NordVPN representatives when I ran into the problem on the Linux. Neither company were of any help and didn't seem interested in addressing it on their next update.

Perhaps a VPN is more of a problem than it is worth for non-standard Android OSes. Guess I will just have to risk it with no VPN, unless someone else has overcome this problem.

You should read up on how VPN works in network terms, it would help you understand why you had the problem which could've been handled by selecting an option "Allow local traffic" (or similar, forgot what it is called in the proton VPN appl

Allow local network on proton doesn't work for me.
I have to use split tunneling for the printer to appear.

I have trouble using a printer with Mullvad VPN client. Tried both "allow local traffic" and split tunneling (excluding Default Print Service). Still, the printer can't be detected.

Without VPN it just works from the same phone.

If you successfully configured a VPN + printer on a local network, please share your magic 🤗

DeletedUser115 besides the above mentioned of split tunneling and allow local network you have to go into the OS VPN settings and turn off "block connections without a VPN". I turn this off to print, and use KDE then immediatly turn it back on. I find myself having to toggle this option most and wish there was a widget with an indicator of its current setting because its easy to forget. Mistakenly leaving it off I have had Libretorrent leak my actual IP.
