  • Would apkmirror.com be a good temporary replacement for Aurora?

As Aurora is currently facing some technical difficulties I'm wondering if APKmirror would be a good temporary replacement for a few apps? As I don't want to hand out my phone number again for a Google account. I plan on using these apps for a short period and thus don't think I really need the updates? But would apkmirror be a safe alternative? I would like to hear you people's opinion on it! 🤠

Frankly you don't have any other choices. All the other APK sites are less trustworthy than APK mirror IMO.

I only used aurora for netflix.
I now use apkmirror. The signature of the app is the same, so I consider it a reliable alternative, for troubleshooting in my case.

Apparently F-droid was a fork of Aptoide. It sounds..usable if you're vigilant; users can create their own stores so there can be multiple versions of the same app available. It reminds me of the AUR or GURU. Piracy has been an issue on their platform, and they had a breach in 2020.

DeletedUser115 If your consumer applications embed Google libraries, whether you have the sandbox play service installed or not makes no difference because the applications will always have Google libraries.

[deleted] Correct, they would still have Google libraries. What makes a difference though is whether such libraries are able to communicate with Play Services or not. Practically this affects how much data Google would be able to collect from your phone.

[deleted] Because it depends on a bunch of other gcrap, and is itself untrustworthy.

[deleted] Hi, why use aurora when we have the real play store on GrapheneOS?

Because I don't want the playstore on my system and I don't want my app instances associated with a unique google account.

        [deleted] Is Aurora trustworthy? Honestly?

        Is Play store?

What's your definition of trust worthy?

I consider Aurora more trust worthy than Play. Maybe less secure, but still more trust worthy.

Personally, my logic is to avoid multiplying trust.
As Aurora acts as a kind of proxy, I prefer to go directly through google, more secure, than to add a third party.

The fact that aurora didn't get an update for a year and then had difficulty applying an update, other than on F-droid, leaves me very doubtful about the trust I could place in it.
