hakayova unlikely that this would help since it is happening in more than one profile, but maybe try clearing the messaging app's storage in settings > apps > all apps > messaging > storage & cache?

niko-goso I have started experiencing this exact issue as well. Exception is the default Admin profile GOS Messenger app is still displaying incoming messages whereas the non-Admin profile app is not.

At this point I'm not sure what "this exact issue" would mean, since:

The original post was "I am no longer able to see SMS messages sent to me" -- in either profile (hakayova), while it seems that you can see messages in the owner profile,
The most-recent post was "i might have found a solution for this" (Test123456789),
The thread is three months old.

Has the solution suggested by Test123456789 been tried? Have the other suggestions made earlier in the thread (GrapheneOS GrapheneOS GrapheneOS other8026) been tried?

traveller Thank you for your input. My experience with my previous phone, Pixel 5a was the same, and I figured that this would happen if I acted too quickly after receiving the notification. Two things worked for me; 1. tapping the notification itself, which would open the message using the Messages app and display it, 2. waiting for about 15 seconds or so before opening Messages app, then the new message would show there. The problems I have now never happened with my previous phone, which I was using the Owner, not a secondary user, and I am inclined to blame that. However, some people report that they don't have the issues I have, although they are using secondary user(s) on their phones similar to mine.

hakayova Sorry, I didn't mention that I tried it on my phone first. All of my messages still show up after clearing the storage in both my owner and another profile.

SMS messages are stored in a database outside of the default messaging app, so clearing the messaging app's storage shouldn't affect stored messages. Regardless, I still don't have much confidence my suggestion will work anyway. Just suggested it because it's a strange issue so throwing out suggestions even if they might not work.

Thank you @other8026 for the explanation. I tried it and didn't solve my problem. My owner is not setup to use SMS, although it is allowed to, so I only cleaned storage for the secondary user.

I am curious as to in which way the owner profile was set up to not use SMS. Was the Messaging app disabled or deleted?

The owner has the permission to use SMS; however, the Messaging app is not set up there. When the app is opened, it presents the setup screen which just wasn't used/set up. I set it up with the secondary user instead to prevent duplication.

FWIW, ebay notifications don't work either. Perhaps they are SMS based, although they appear on the ebay app. I have Signal, Mastodone, email apps and Mastodone working as expected. Since the only 2FA authentication options for ebay are 1. the app and 2. SMS, I have no way to login to my ebay account at the moment. I will restore from a backup that I did over the weekend tonight and report back if it solved the problems. Fingers crossed.

I ended up factory-resetting the phone. Deleting the secondary user continued to cause problems with apps, weird stuff like Bitwarden not being able to connect to the server, etc. It took me about 4 hours to re-install 93 apps, some of which still needs configuring. I am now using the Owner account and can receive SMS messages; however, messaging app still does not respect the customized notification sound settings and keeps playing the default one. I am not sure yet if the customized ringtones are respected.

Coming from Pixel 5a, these changes feel like regression to me, since everything was working as expected there. I am also not a big fan of optic fingerprint reader, but the rest will hopefully go smoothly.

I still prefer GrapheneOS to any other alternative, as much frustrated as I may sound. It's got the right values at the right places, and the rest is more tolerable. I cannot imagine how much work and self-sacrifice it took to get it to where it is now. Huge thanks to all developers and maintainers!

Hi guys,
i might have found a solution for this. I had the same issue as described here. Notification on received message was there, but no message (empty). Also I could send SMS and my girlfriend received the message.

I tried couple days of days and i really didn't want to factory reset.
My solution: I went into the owner profile and gave the GOS SMS App, Telephone App and Contacts app every permission possible. Also I force stopped SMS App.
Now SMS App works perfectly fine for owner and all secondary profiles.
I am not really sure, but I suggest letting the standard GOS apps have all their permissions they have right from the Start, that's why maybe also your factory reset worked.
I denied the permissions while setting up GOS, because I was paranoid :D but recieving SMS is more worth ^^

I have started experiencing this exact issue as well. Exception is the default Admin profile GOS Messenger app is still displaying incoming messages whereas the non-Admin profile app is not.

Prior to no longer showing incoming messages the Messenger app was taking longer to show a message after the notification. The lag time increased to almost 4 seconds.

The same content seems to exist in both profiles but if course no Contacts info on the Admin profile.

This feels like a bug in the actual GOS Messenger app or in its interaction with the OS. The experience of it slowing down feels like a memory leak but the OS is not impacted and using the rest of the app's UI was still fine.

One other thing I haven't been able to solve is that the notifications for the GOS Messenger app continue to hide content on the Lock Screen even though I configured settings to show all content.

Loving GOS and I feel an optional subscription model, in addition to donations, would be appropriate to support the GOS devs. Open Source is under threat from global interests who don't want people to have access to private, secure systems outside a global Digital ID surveillance and enforcement infrastructure. This infrastructure that is including programmable currencies and social credit systems with quotas on all spending. GOS needs to remain independent from outside, institutional funding.

There is a baseline problem underlying various issues experienced by users which is messages not being received yet no problem sending.

Some users experience issues in all profiles and some only experience issues with non-Admin profiles but all experience the baseline problem.

It seems like the baseline problem is very rare if we consider the number of posts in this thread and across the forum.

My post was to log another expression of this baseline problem not discuss a process to resolve. I have not wanted to execute a hack that might erase data without resolving the problem.

I have deleted a significant number of non-important conversations and archived others in case a database access problem might be a factor. No change.

Since my post in this thread my phone has completed an update to GOS, no change.

It cannot be ruled out that a cause could be the interaction between Messenger app and Google software components or GOS software security and privacy software or architecture.

One test could be to install an alternative SMS app and test its operation. Any suggestions for an alternative privacy protecting SMS app?
