hakayova Are you using the default Messaging app or something else, and are you using the Owner user?

I am using the default Messaging app. My WiFi calling is off. I am not using the Owner user.

hakayova So you're using a secondary user, not the Owner user? Try in the Owner user.

The Owner user doesn't even receive the notification, nor the message. Secondary user receives generic notification, but not the message itself.

hakayova Check the notification configuration for the Messaging app in both.

Owner's notification was disabled. I enabled it, but it didn't cause any change in behavior. In other words, owner still doesn't receive the message and doesn't notify. Secondary user's notification was already enabled, so no changes were made.
I am starting to think that using a secondary user is a bad idea...

Check the Do Not Disturb setting. Also, reboot the device.

Thank you! Do not disturb was already off for both users. After rebooting the device no change observed in behavior.

@GrapheneOS , I cannot receive texts for 2FA, such as from PayPal. This is the worst experience I had with GrapheneOS so far. What I did about a week ago when I upgraded to Pixel 8a was installing all my apps without network access on owner's account, transferring all of them to the secondary user's account, give them network access there, and set all of them up there. This did work for about a week until this morning, although with glitches, such as ringtones, or SMS notification sound settings not being respected. Should I set everything up for the owner user and delete the secondary user? This is how I used to use my Pixel 5a for 3 years without any significant problem until the recent upgrade.

I would appreciate any additional suggestions to solve this issue. Right now I can make and receive calls, send SMS messages, but cannot receive them, which is critical on many levels. Please help.

Not an answer (sorry), but I can confirm, that occasionally had the same behaviour with the default Messages app and SMS not showing up in the list of messages. I get a notification "New Message", open it and nothing is there in the app. I assumed there was some problem with the Messages app, but could be wrong.
Once I switched from Pixel 7 to Pixel 9 (which involved reinstalling GrapheneOS from scratch) this started to happen much less (if at all).

hakayova unlikely that this would help since it is happening in more than one profile, but maybe try clearing the messaging app's storage in settings > apps > all apps > messaging > storage & cache?

traveller Thank you for your input. My experience with my previous phone, Pixel 5a was the same, and I figured that this would happen if I acted too quickly after receiving the notification. Two things worked for me; 1. tapping the notification itself, which would open the message using the Messages app and display it, 2. waiting for about 15 seconds or so before opening Messages app, then the new message would show there. The problems I have now never happened with my previous phone, which I was using the Owner, not a secondary user, and I am inclined to blame that. However, some people report that they don't have the issues I have, although they are using secondary user(s) on their phones similar to mine.

other8026 Thank you. I will save this option as the last resort, since I do have some previously received messages that I don't want to lose.

hakayova Sorry, I didn't mention that I tried it on my phone first. All of my messages still show up after clearing the storage in both my owner and another profile.

SMS messages are stored in a database outside of the default messaging app, so clearing the messaging app's storage shouldn't affect stored messages. Regardless, I still don't have much confidence my suggestion will work anyway. Just suggested it because it's a strange issue so throwing out suggestions even if they might not work.

Thank you @other8026 for the explanation. I tried it and didn't solve my problem. My owner is not setup to use SMS, although it is allowed to, so I only cleaned storage for the secondary user.

I am curious as to in which way the owner profile was set up to not use SMS. Was the Messaging app disabled or deleted?

The owner has the permission to use SMS; however, the Messaging app is not set up there. When the app is opened, it presents the setup screen which just wasn't used/set up. I set it up with the secondary user instead to prevent duplication.

FWIW, ebay notifications don't work either. Perhaps they are SMS based, although they appear on the ebay app. I have Signal, Mastodone, email apps and Mastodone working as expected. Since the only 2FA authentication options for ebay are 1. the app and 2. SMS, I have no way to login to my ebay account at the moment. I will restore from a backup that I did over the weekend tonight and report back if it solved the problems. Fingers crossed.

I ended up factory-resetting the phone. Deleting the secondary user continued to cause problems with apps, weird stuff like Bitwarden not being able to connect to the server, etc. It took me about 4 hours to re-install 93 apps, some of which still needs configuring. I am now using the Owner account and can receive SMS messages; however, messaging app still does not respect the customized notification sound settings and keeps playing the default one. I am not sure yet if the customized ringtones are respected.

Coming from Pixel 5a, these changes feel like regression to me, since everything was working as expected there. I am also not a big fan of optic fingerprint reader, but the rest will hopefully go smoothly.

I still prefer GrapheneOS to any other alternative, as much frustrated as I may sound. It's got the right values at the right places, and the rest is more tolerable. I cannot imagine how much work and self-sacrifice it took to get it to where it is now. Huge thanks to all developers and maintainers!
