If the fingerprint reader is as finicky as the one I had on my pixel 7, I really hope face unlock gets implemented at some point (even if not with initial build)

Big thank you to the developers of GrapheneOS!

I am one of those who bought the Pixel 8 (pro) and is looking forward to flash GrapheneOS on it. Please take the time you guys need and enjoy the road to total awesomeness! 👑

There have been a few Reddit posts (sorry I don't have links) where people who owned 6's and 7's (and sometimes returned them) and now bought an 8 said the fingerprint reader on the 8 is a huge improvement.

matchboxbananasynergy I've been using my pixel 8 but only limited until graphene is available for it. The face unlock feature makes it very very convenient

I understand the privacy risks etc but I don't think I'll end up in a situation where someone could use it against me

Seconded, would love this feature, even if it’s a little later as I’m sure the devs have their hands full right now :)

Some of the current turmoil is because, empirically, pre-release testing by Google's designated partner companies and by beta-test end users missed a bunch of issues (for example, clearly a bunch of annoying issues related to profile switching). It is possible that Google's face-unlock code also has issues (perhaps also related to profile switching!). The code on Google's OS may not be the same as what they provide to AOSP.

All in all, I would personally counsel people against buying an 8 to run GrapheneOS on with an expectation of face unlock ever working. Maybe it will! And it might even happen soon! But it also might never happen.

If that would be a deal-breaker for you, maybe hold off on the purchase. The price of a Pixel 8 or 8 Pro is more likely to go down over time than to go up, so by waiting you might end up saving money while skipping jitters.

Please note that I do not speak for the GrapheneOS project.

Experimental releases for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are now available. Fingerprint unlock support isn't working yet and other features may be missing. It likely won't be necessary to reinstall to move to future production releases.

If you want to get the releases and help with testing, please come to https://app.element.io/#/room/#testing:grapheneos.org to find instructions and related information.

If you do and notice any bugs, please report them in that room, so that we can have a centralized place for this, instead of separate reports spanning multiple channels.

As it has increased in price by a fair amount, I think I might wait since I really want the Pro version and that is very expensive. See if I can find a Slickdeal trade in somehow or hell might have to change carriers to get this Pixel 8 Pro with a trade in!! Want that extra Ram on the 8 Pro and it sounds like they did a good job on it this time.
Really would like that face unlock as I have on my iPhone XR but I can wait. If face unlock can't securely be implemented, then best to wait. Glad to hear that others on Reddit who have owned 6's and 7's and just got 8's that at least the fingerprint reader has improved. I just order 2 new cases on Prime Big Deal Days to hopefully make my Pixel 6 work much better ( screwed up my waterproof case fingerprint reader wrong, had special fingerprint spot that I made worthless ). Keep up the excellent work !!

Be very careful about carrier-provided phones, at least if you are in the United States: some carriers will carrier-unlock a device after a while, but some will not OEM-unlock. To install GrapheneOS you must be able to OEM-unlock.

And historically Verizon will absolutely never OEM-unlock at all, not even a little bit, not even if some low-level employee thinks it can be done.

            Be careful out there!

When fingerprint works, will there be another annoucement? I need it as it is a very important feature, then I can start testing. I don´t want to miss it if it is only comminucated on Matrix when it´s available.
              Thank you!

As a former Verizon customer, I can confirm this.

applesbana That depends entirely on whether any issues are found during testing that have to be sorted out.

Keep in mind that experimental release are production releases, not some kind of debug release. They're just releases that are not yet released to the alpha channel due to more testing being needed before the team is confident to put it there. Even if you're not comfortable with flashing the release yet, you can swing by https://app.element.io/#/room/#testing:grapheneos.org to see what others are saying/reporting to get a sense of how things are going. :)

I've had a flawless experience so far with the experimental releases. 👍

                  Thx for sharing that!

Pixel 8 Pro on the experimental release here, no issues found so far. Works perfectly for me.
