TLDR you can't create new Telegram account using their website APK and or without Play services installed on your device. If you have stock Android account lying around the house, use it to create a Telegram account. You can then sign in to their website APK and just use it from there just fine.

I never needed Google Services and don't even use the number on my phone. Code was sent to a number I access on line.

SundarPichai How did you do it, I've been trying for days in graphheneOS and it's impossible for me to get the code

I installed F-Droid after downloading from their website and searched Telegram FOSS. Alternatively, since F-Droid apparently doesn't always have the highest security level SDK version of the app, you can just simply search Telegram FOSS on github if it is on there and download directly from there. I read some people recommending an app called Obtanium that updates your apps downloaded from github so you don't have to search for updates yourself. Obtanium I believe is also on F-Droid

[deleted] that's what i used.....but it wasn't on graphene to be fair, as i did it before i started using graphene. but i see no reason why it wouldn't work as it does not depend on any google services. it hink it just asks for telephone number to register anyway, if i recall correctly

SundarPichai I never used Telegram FOSS, but allegedly you can't create account from it either. Their website APK also doesn't seem to allow it. It just throws you into the all familiar loop of "verification code sent to your other device".

I created one very recently and only Play Store version worked. I'm not sure whether it requires Google Play or if just pulling Play store version from Aurora Store will work. Once you have an account you can sign in into anything you want and use it from there.

well i guess telegram joins the ranks of all the other apps that are becoming shittier by the minute, making it more and more difficult to use alternative clients. screw telegram, stop using it if you can. stop using any app that adopts bullshit practices to try and get the 17 people still not using their 'official' apps

Hi there! I had the same problem and tried to use the FOSS version of the app from F-Droid, but unfortunately it didn't work either. I understood that the problem is actually on the side of Telegram. Thank you for your helpful advice.

Creating a anonymous Telegram account through TelegramX app should work.

I have successfully installed and configured TelegramX via Aurora-store, and now I can follow some Telegram accounts!
I am so happy because I thought I couldn't use the app on my phone. Thank you so much!!!
