Here is what I did:

  1. Updated my car system/applications
  2. Installed Android Auto through GrapheneOS Apps
  3. In System > Applications > All applications > Android Auto > Other settings:
    1. Tapped 10 times on version to enable developer settings
    2. In … > Developer settings, activated Unknown sources
    3. Connect a new car
    4. Plugged USB cable
    5. "No installed application compatible with USB device" error message with a link to https://www.android.com/auto

I also paired my device with my car through RLINK/Bluetooth and disabled the phone function on the Bluetooth connection, merely allowing multimedia.
Whatever I do I cannot connect to my car.

    After installation, Android Auto has to be set up from the Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play > Android Auto configuration screen, which contains permission toggles, links to related configuration screens, configuration tips, and links to optional Android Auto dependencies.

      I had difficulties finding that Sandboxed Google Play, and I definitely was not using Android Auto through it!

      I now activated the wired option for Android Auto and was able to use it in my vehicle through cable.
      However, even though I tried the wireless option, and am able to associate my phone with the vehicle through Bluetooth, when I press the "speech" button on the wheel, the car system complains the application is not up-to-date enough.
      Is this a known problem?

      By the way, it seems I need to have the "phone call" option activated on the Bluetooth connection for the speech button to trigger something on the car side.
      If merely activate the "multimedia" option is, nothing happens.
      Is this legitimate?

      Any idea on why wired Auto works, but not Wireless?

      We've been looking for a new car recently and found out that wireless android auto connectivity is not a given thing in any car make or model or variant. Some models may offer it, for others it's available at a premium and others are limited to wired connection.

      So, first make sure if your car (make, model, variant, build) actually supports wireless android auto connections.
      Check with your Renault dealer.

      My car allows for Bluetooth pairing with my phone, through another way in the same multimedia system (ie separate from Android Auto).

      I have no idea on how to make Android Auto to work over a Bluetooth link, nor on how to debug what is wrong/missing.

      I just found a FAQ on my car's manufacturer website providing the steps to pair the multimedia system with Android Auto wirelessly, the exact steps I couldn't make work in my car.
      To be precise, that special "wireless" button on the wheel exists on my car, but pressing it at the right time doesn't yield anything.

      TL; DR: Everything weights in the way of my car supporting wireless Android Auto, nothing weights the other wya, yet it does not work and I do not know how to debug that.
      Any steps to follow to achieve that?

            I would encourage you to read at the source, rather on some random thrid-party websites.

            The official Google documentation on Android Auto explicitely mentions Bluetooth.

            There is even a link to the Android website listing compatible cars, in which my vehicle appears, for the expected manufacturing year range.
            Yet another intel my car does indeed seem to support wireless Android Auto.

            Is there anyone here with knowledge on how to debug non-working wireless Android Auto on Pixel 6a?

                For some cars, baseline permissions for wireless Android Auto are needed even when using wired Android Auto. Therefore, if wired Android Auto is unable to connect to the car with only wired permissions granted, try granting wireless permissions instead.

                If you're using both wired and wireless, do you have both enabled in Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play > Android Auto?

                    This messages seems to be intended for people having the wired connection not working. Android Auto works on wired connection for me.

                      LOL. This different "official Google documentation" explicitly says "5 GHz Wi-Fi".

                      Edit: And this "Google documentation of unknown officialness" explains what goes over Bluetooth and what goes over Wi-Fi.

                      If you get wireless Android Auto working without Wi-Fi, I think people here would be interested in a report along those lines.

                        I tried to install Android Auto from the App Store but it doesn't work.
                        It says:

                          Fede Which build of GrapheneOS is the device running? What kind of device? Is that the exact text of the error message?

                            It's an Pixel 6 GOS with Android 15 build 2025031400.
                            It starts showing:

                            • Google Play Services: Do you want to install this app? Allow network permissions
                            • I click "install"
                            • Then the Android Auto window shows: Do you want to install the app? Allow network permissions
                            • I click "install"
                            • Google Play Store: Do you want to install this app? Allow network permissions
