  • A small feature request for missing emojis in the GrapheneOS keyboard

miyeta21 I can confirm this is present 😏 after carefully searching.

However, I cannot for the life of me find 🥲.

Embarrassed by my missing out on 😏, I made a list of the common smileys that I could not find on the GrapheneOS keyboard:

Disclaimer: I may still be blind and some may be present. If present in the keyboard, kindly do aid me in some form.

Personal note: I remember, I frequently used to use these, 🥹🤣🥲🥰🤪🤨🧐🥳🤬🤯😵‍💫🫤 before transitioning to GrapheneOS a year ago. Because of the absence from the keyboard, I slowly slowly forgot to use these. 😌

Murcielago I also use emojis regularly and initially thought about which keyboard I could also install.

In the end, I realized that I get along very well with the GrapheneOS keyboard as I mainly use emojis in messengers (e.g. Signal). Most messengers have their own emojis, which I then use - I personally like them a bit better than the standard keyboard emojis and there is a practical search field. Otherwise, I use the standard keyboard emojis.

What I haven't found a good solution for yet, however, is for sending GIFs...

True. I also do journal myself a lot (via self-hosted nextcloud notes) and hence the emoji requirement.
For GIFs, I think my workflow of visiting giphy (or something like that) in a tab is a work around; and I agree it is clumsy. Like the google keyboard, I would not mind a GIF tab, either.

                    miyeta21 Cool, can I ask how you manage to send images from Giphy in Messenger as a GIF? When I try to either download them or share them from the browser, Messenger either sends no image at all or a static photo. Downloading I always get a .webp as the file type.

                        router99 you don’t want them. Others do 🤷 it is what it is and I don’t think you should concern yourself too much! It’s a fun way to add a specific point to a message or a personal note. If they’re there you can just ignore them. If they’re not there then the people that want them have no choice in that.

                                      Unfortunately, this method requires the GIPHY app to be installed.

                                      I don't want to crush the discussion, as this is about emojis - but I've just been playing around with GIPHY again, found the solution and wanted to share it briefly:

                                      Go to website > search GIF > tap on desired GIF > press send button > tap & hold on image > then you can download the GIF or share directly from the Android dialog.

                                      A bit cumbersome, but I'm actually quite happy with the GrapheneOS default keyboard and can use this little workaround to interact with emojis and GIFs without having to install a separate keyboard - perfect! 👌

                                            When it comes to keyboards, I have not been happy in a very long time. Last time I was using a keyboard I actually liked, was when I had a Sony Xperia smartphone. The built in Xperia Keyboard had auto-suggestion and dictionary that actually worked (even in Norwegian! 🥳). It supported automatically switching between languages (if the first two-three word you write is in English, it would start suggesting English words, and the same for Norwegian or any other language you had configured). I have not seen this functionality on any other keyboard since (the other keyboards only give you the option to change locale by clicking a button or swiping the space bar).

                                            It could also suggest emojis, if you had used them in relation to a word or a sentence. You could write a word, and if there existed an emoji for that word, it was suggested (e.g. write France and the flag 🇨🇵 would pop up. No more endlessly looking through the flag-tab or any other emoji-tab. Or write fire and 🔥 would appear).

                                            It's just a shame that the Xperia keyboard has not been updated since 2017 and it is made for android 7, so I can't install it on newer phones.

                                            How is it that there are several open source keyboards out there that has development stopped(?), when they have so much potential? I'm currently using OpenBoard, but autocomplete or suggestions does not work. And I've tried Gboard, but I don't like it, and autocomplete and suggestions does not work there either....

                                            I'm not a developer, but I wish someone could just take some of the code from Xperia Keyboard, put it in a open source keyboard (yes OpenBoard, I'm looking at you!), and optimize for Android 14. Is it too much to ask? 🥹 From OpenBoards Github-page I can see that they write that coding a keyboard is very complicated, I don't doubt that. I like OpenBoard, but I really want autosuggestions for words/sentences and a dictionary that works.

                                                  Auto-complete and suggestions work properly with GBoard.

                                                  All the features you mention here that you liked on your Xperia keyboard also exist on GBoard including emoji suggestions and automatically switching between languages.

                                                        Google must have done a lot of work on gboard since I last used it because it was always buggy.
