WhatsApp APK not updating

I downloaded WhatsApp via the APK provided on the official website. It did not update once since then, I am still on version 2.23.11.78. But in another post it was stated that the APK had its own updater - like the APK from Signal. Now I don't know how to update it correctly. I have play services installed but I am not logged in so I can't use the play store. In addition to that I heard that WhatsApp bans people using aurora store. Is that true or can I update WhatsApp through aurora? And why does WhatsApp not update on its own?

I think that's the right one, yes. I wonder whether it would be possible to update WhatsApp by adding that link to Obtainium, never tried it myself.

Since you have not downloaded WhatsApp via Play Store or Aurora Store, you will not be able to update it from those sources. You just have to manually download it from their website again and install it again which will update it to the latest version. Are we talking about this link? --> https://www.whatsapp.com/android/

Yes that's the link. But doesn't WhatsApp have an updater built into it?

cadmium this is the source where I downloaded mine from, had it for some time and was never once prompted for update so I have every reason to believe that unlike Signal version from their website this one doesn't autoupdate. Just to add, you can check regularly Play Store version to see if you are up to date.

[deleted] I don't have official WhatsApp APK currently installed on my device, but when I did, I swear it came with its own updater and in general was the first class APK akin to Signal, unless I'm thinking of Telegram but I don't think so.

@cadmium Signal APK which everybody here agrees does auto update is always last in line to do so in case you're going solely by the current Play Store version and/or had WhatsApp installed only for a week.

Whatsapp APK¹'s inbuilt updater has nothing to do with the Google Play store.

WhatsApp does not ban users for using Aurora Store.

Whatsapp has been caught temporarily banning users for installing Whatsapp from Aurora store: Temporarily banned from whatsapp (www.reddit.com), WhatsApp Temporary ban because of violation.. (discuss.grapheneos.org)

I'm facing the same problem but downloading the apk directly from WhatsApp web site source. When you click on update instantly it says it hasn't updated. Inhave successfully updated exactly this way last week and since a year ago. Does anyone having this issue? All installation permission was granted and it is a secondary profile. Always worked and now simply stopped.

Coincidence or not i managed to update the same version of whatsapp in anither device i have with only two differences:

The device that could not update was with the latest alpha grapheneOs vanadium and GrapheneOs appstore. The rest they are using exacly the dame config and versions

I forgot to mention that when I click update it prompt a pop up saying that my mobile and personal data are more vulnerable to attacks of unknown app..and if you agree... And you can continue or cancel. When you continue it says app not installed. And it is the same source that I always get.

[SOLVED] I cannot delete the post but I could manage this by rolling back appstore updates to the original version... Which for me is 33 now.

No actually I didn't solved the problem. The update fails and there is nothing about what I said of grapheme os appstore or vanadium on beta.

But on the topic of WhatsApp, how do you Grapheners deal with the backups? I do not want to add a Google Drive account to my phone, nor do I want to root. Does this basically mean that I cannot have backups of my chats?

I'd rather use something like Signal, but we all know how it is with these apps. I can't persuade everyone to just move away from WhatsApp.

No, there is a local backup as well. Just make sure to turn on the E2E Encrypted backup option.

Open WhatsApp and go to 3 dots > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > click Backup

userofgos Yes, thank you! That's kind of what I was coming to as well, was just unsure about the encryption key. Now the next step (maybe) is to sort out Tasker and how I could automate backups to, for example, Proton Drive. Let's see, I feel stupid.
