DanielMicayfan123 1. Using Google software defeats the main purpose of degoogling your device. Stay away from it. Well, it isn't that simple, but then again, it is. 2. You can't avoid coarse geolocation unless you remove sim card or use the phone in airplane mode. And even then you can still be located through your wifi access point if you are using it. Any app that can view your network connections can potentially very precisely locate you on a map (using VPN helps there). No way out.

      [deleted] I would be surprised if the phone is not locatable without a sim card since emergency calls are possible. The only way I would trust is airplane mode.

      For Google services, there is still a big difference between the sandbox approach of Gos and a classic installation of Google services...

        [deleted] Using Google services does not defeat the purpose of using GrapheneOS any more than using other apps and services. It's not specifically about avoiding Google apps and services, and our sandboxed Google Play compatibility layer approach means they can't do anything more than other apps and services.

          [deleted] Apps can't see nearby Wi-Fi and cellular networks without the Location permission. Location means location not GPS specifically. Detecting location via public IP address when there's no VPN is very coarse, especially for typical cellular connections. This is not related to the cellular network knowing your location when using it.

              DanielMicayfan123 Please make a new thread for new questions. 1 question per thread please as requested above. Google text recognition works if you install what's required. Use airplane mode to disable cellular when you don't want to the cellular network to know where you are.

                GrapheneOS the app can't directly use location without permission, but if it can view your network connections, it can process them and together with network permission can pass them on and cross reference them server-side against their location. Can't confirm only based on what I read there are databases of internet access points linked to their locations. Anyway, I am not the expert here, I am only trying to tread carefully, but not always :)

                    Don’t use regular phone carrier services, only VOIP numbers, and WIFI only. That’s about it.
                    Can’t fool or obfuscate radio signals bouncing between your phone and cell towers in this regard when the SIM on your phone is linked to your ID.

                    Alternatively acquire a completely anonymous SIM.

                          [deleted] Apps can't view connections made by other apps. They can view basic information about the available networks. They can't view any information on nearby Wi-Fi networks without Location. They can't view information on the current Wi-Fi network either, only the network connection.

                              GrapheneOS I do realize that there is a lot of misinformation about said things circulating around the internet and I am humbled when I see how poor my knowledge about these things is compared to you for example. I received my warning and I have taken it seriously, so I will not compel others against using GrapheneOS other than officially recommended way. My threat model is in fact very low, taken care of security-wise mainly by the OS itself. Thank you for the nudge.

                                  You should be careful about using bogus terms like "misinformation" (or "disinformation"). That word does NOT mean "falsehood", "lie", or anything else that it is used to IMPLY. All it actually means is information that is contrary to government propaganda. To take it a step further, what is categorized as "misinformation" is USUALLY the truth. If it wasn't, they would say "falsehood" or "lie" or some other term that clearly labels the information as factually incorrect.

                                          All I meant to say that there is a lot of information out there based on guesswork, without any factual proof that many people take as their own view deepening general confusion. It does not have to be intended to spread false information, it is just untrue. But yes, there is disinformation too and often times it looks very benign.

                                                  Truthiness: things that are factually wrong, but "feel" true.

                                                  Misinformation and Disinformation both refer to things that are factually wrong, the only difference is the intent.
                                                  It doesn't matter if it comes from government propaganda or not.

                                                  But what's really disturbing is any attempt to Galileo Gambit redefine these words as some kind of badge of honor or validation of truth. Classic example of, "they laughed at Galileo, and he was right, so if they laugh at my quack ideas, I must be right".
                                                  It's a common logical fallacy. Just because governments call it disinformation, doesn't mean it's the opposite or somehow the truth.
