Hahax will it not still connect to Sandboxed Google Play Services I use even with Network off?

Keystrokes are very bad for privacy if they get to Google

    There's no requirement to have any Google services to use Gboard. Gboard works just fine on de-googled phones, without Google services or Framework etc.

    Changing the keyboard program won't change the spell checker.

      Changing the keyboard program allowed me to change the spell checker in:
      System/Language & input/Spell cheeker
      where I could choose GrapheneOS Spell Checker or Gboard spell checker

        f13a-6c3a Ah, interesting. So gboard comes with its own spell checker.

        You can also try other keyboards.
        There is OpenBoard, and some others.

        I don't know but spell cheking with gboard is not working for me. Using last graphene -> android 14. Gboard is installed from aurorastore and has not permissions.

        1) settings -> system -> languages -> system languages
        first language = english (UK)
        second = Slovak

        2) settings -> system -> keybard -> on-screen keyboard

        • enable gboard and disable keyboard
        • click on gboard -> languages I see english and slovak

        3) settings -> system -> keyboard -> spell checker

        • languages : use system languages
        • default spell checker : gboard

        4) I think it is not necessary but I did want to be sure I did restart phone

        5) opening messaging app and trying to write some words

        • when using slovak language then word suggestions and correction are not working. I can write word which does not exist and it has not red underline
        • when using english language then everything works ok

        any suggestions? thanks

          janci23 If I recall correctly, the network permission needs to be enabled to download the language packs.

          My suggestion would be to go into GBoard's settings: Settings > Apps > All apps > GBoard > Storage and Cache > clear storage, then enable the network permission, set up GBoard to use any languages you need to type in, maybe type a couple things in some random app to make sure it's working correctly, then disable the network permission.

            Hello all,

            So I'm a brand new Graphene user with a pixel 7. I am having the same issue which started this thread. The keyboard is absolutely terrible (coming from iPhone) I went to the Aurora store and typed in Gboard. But it seems to be from Google. Is that correct? or is there another similar keyboard from Google which is not what we are talking about here? I am trying to avoid google. If I download this from google, will this compromise my privacy? How can I proceed here? Sorry I read the above but still kinda lost, I am very new to Graphene.

              Each application in android is isolated by a sandbox and by default each non-system application has only minimal privileges. For example an application cannot access your user storage without the user providing the privileges to do so. An malicious application has first to comprise the kernel-level sandbox and multiple additional security features (e.g access controls) before it could gain additional privileges.

              If you’re trying to degoogle because you don’t trust Google, the very last thing you should install is a Google keyboard. It works offline apparently, but you do need to download language packs initially I believe. I just wouldn’t do it. Who knows what that initial connection will do, who knows whether your keystrokes are stored until you must update the language pack. Who knows if the inter app communication ‘feature’ will get involved and somehow send data on everything you’ve ever typed to Google. Openboard is apparently good, and I’m sure there are other projects you can look at.

              On the other hand, many here swear by gboard, and I suppose if you utilise all of the scopes and functions of grapheneOS correctly you will be ok - it really depends on you.
