Which email provider is your preferred one? Tuta vs Proton vs Others?

Biggest down fall I see with Tuta and Proton is you cannot use this Thunderbird for Android. (Or is there a way I don't know about?) I just really like thunderbird, the tuts and proton aops are good, I just like Thunderbird better.

I personally use both, Proton for almost everything (with Proton Ultimate and Simplelogin aliases) and Tuta (still on the 1€/month plan) for few things where I need notifications without google play services.

I'm using both, they both have good and bad points.
Tuta, a problem for me was the lack of being able to have more than one signature per email address or alias. Having a business domain name and a personal email address, this was problematic. Not so with Proton.
Tuta contacts sync with contacts on the pixel, which is brilliant, I don't like having two contact lists. Proton won't do this.
Overall, proton is more user friendly for the non techie types like me.

Proton is a more polished and it's faster, also much more enterprise, but Tuta used to have a 1€ tier. Tuta is slowly getting better with each feature they add. I wish they would rebase their app to default Android app libraries.

greenwood You can use Proton with thunderbird by downloading proton mail bridge, but you need a paid account to do so. I think any of these, Plus, Mail Essentials, Professional, or Visionary. You have to install the bridge on your computer. I think Windows, Mac, and Linux are supported. I use Proton. I think the others mentioned here are also good. considering the inherent weaknesses of email, I think they are more or less all on an equal footing. I like how Proton allows you to add additional encryption keys, or remove the old ones. I am not sure if this can be done with the others. I also like the bundled packages, I have Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Calendar, which use e2ee. There are some other apps, but I don't use them.

I like and use Proton. I even bought a more expensive plan than I need to try and support them. They seem most likely to get to a full ecosystem with privacy respecting tech first, but as it is they are missing some central features, and I don't understand why they venture off into new areas far afield without finishing up what they already have:
o Contacts aren't stand alone (it's built into Proton Mail) and those don't sync with Android Contacts or DAVx (so caller ID doesn't work, you can't use your Contacts list to initiate an SMS, etc. unless you manually duplicate and keep updated Androids native Contacts app).
o Proton Calendar (and Mail) don't really work offline.
o No multi time zones in Proton Calendar entries on Android app (desktop web interface does)
o Linux VPN app seems a generation (or two) behind -- but they do have one, so I'm grateful
o Drive doesn't sync on Linux (manual browser interface only; works great on Windows though)
o Photos app only syncs one direction from Android (you have to manually delete in multiple places), and there are no galleries or organization tools
o No Tasks or Notes apps

So, to get to a full solution, I use Proton apps where I can, but then I have to update all my Contacts manually twice in 2 address books and then subscribe to Etesync to get my Android Contacts to sync securely across devices. Then, I use Tasks.org which I sync across devices using DAVx and Nextcloud, but then I have to accept that Nextcloud really isn't secure and be careful what I save in Tasks. Then I just work around Proton's limitations for the rest. It works, it's just neither simple or elegant.

I feel like Proton is so close, yet not quite "there." I'm a fan...just...a frustrated fan. If someone has a cleaner way to make it all work I'd love to hear it.

FYI: Periodically, Proton puts out a product road map describing what's upcoming. They just updated this in their blog a few days ago.

I have a foot in both camps, don't like either of them.
Both try to get you more and more involved with them, so a quick easy exit is not available.
All I want is Email, nothing else, I don't like paying for stuff I don't want or use, like storage or calendars VPN etc. Just give me email....

Very happy with Migadu, I use the Micro Plan 19$ with my two domains from about six months .
Everything just works, no issues for now, I switch from Tuta .

I only miss Yubikeys (Webauthn) support .

I'm on both Tuta and Proton, no clear winner but it depends on what you need as they are vastly different:

Proton is fast, pretty, compatible with Thunderbird and OpenPGP, very well integrated with proton pass and proton drive (e.g. you get email aliasing right inside your password manager). Proton doesn't give you reliable notifications on GrapheneOS without installing Sandboxes Play Services. They are also a bit behind Tuta when it comes to security and privacy implementations (privacy of notifications, quantum secure encryption etc). And it doesn't have feature parity beyond OSes.

Tuta is somewhat ugly, slow and incompatible with third party apps. But if you're willing to accept this, you get their own implementation of notifications (works without Play Services) and cutting edge security and privacy technology.

I'm slowly moving my setup (Bitwarden, Tresorit, Tuta, Mullvad) over to Proton Suite as it is more convenient. But if you prefer compartmentalization and the highest standards and are willing to compromise in speed and design, you should probably go with Tuta.

Both have a free plan, so maybe check them out and see whether one is fundamentally superior for your threat model and situation. Maybe you end up using both for different purposes even.

I've decided to cancel my Tuta subscription after I took a look at how they conduct their marketing. To me, dissing other companies and competitors is an unprofessional way of doing business. Even worse is it when a company invents claims about them. Tuta wrote a long blog post about how Google is soon going to "fingerprint" all their users. They went on a huge rant about this, but the source they pointed to does not contain any mention of "fingerprinting" or any other anti-privacy practices at all. It doesn't matter to me if it's Google: companies fabricating stories about other companies is in my eyes an unprofessional and unnecessary way of doing things. There's tons of things to criticize about Google so why the need to make things up. The blog post in question was removed from this forum shortly after being posted.

Their support team didn't respond at all well when I asked for clarification around the article: at first they simply told me that I should read the source in a different light. When I asked if they could point to the specific parts in the source that supported their claims, I received an annoyed reply from a CSR who told me that I had contacted the wrong support team. (Their ticket form didn't inform me of any other way of contacting Tuta about marketing questions). They told me instead to contact the marketing team. They did not forward my request to the marketing team and didn't provide me with contact details (I couldn't find any on their website). I wrote a followup to get their contact info, and I'm awaiting a response from the marketing team.

Proton also sometimes writes misleading info in their blog posts but at least they have corrected the articles the two times I bothered to file a ticket with them. Unlike Tuta, they forwarded my requests to the right person and without going back and forth with me for two weeks. There are other things I think deserves criticism but Proton does have some decent practices as well.

It is a bit of a landmine to criticize Proton on these boards since they are so revered, but I switched from Proton -> Disroot after the Proton CEO waded into politics w/ partisan commentary.

With Disroot, I like that I can utilize my own email clients, and currently run disroot via Kontact and aerc. The website is no frills, but they don't handicap features to get you to pay for a subscription (ie folder creation or email rules), so I never interact w/ the website unless I'm updating a sieve filter

While politics or marketing tactics affect us and our values on an emotional level... I try to not recognize them. It's just not about the product and service and won't make a difference for my security and privacy which is what I'm looking for here. Also it's very depending on what information is leaked when and can quickly change to the better or worse with every new team member.

Tuta could become left extremists and proton right extremists but make the same product of the same quality with the same trust level as today. Should that effect my choice or my threat model? I don't think so.

It's a different story when it comes to customer support though. A company culture that doesn't want to take feedback to become better and that doesn't prioritize to help their customers could easily be a potential threat.

The huge disadvantage of Disroot is that it's not zero knowledge. The staff could look at your emails any time they want.

greenwood Hi, I'm using the proton password manager I bought. This allows me to redirect email aliases to posteo, posteo which allows me to synchronize email, contact, calendar, reminder and note on my iPhone. It requires an effort but my data is encrypted and is mainly located in Europe. The GDPR is stricter than the Swiss LPD (which only applies to Swiss residents).

fid02 You have to be very careful with blog articles from companies or foundations that publish them. There is a notion of marketing behind it. Proton is very strong for that I noticed.

naibed since yer on Disroot have you played around with their implementation of Lacre ? its something I think is needed seeing as how "open keychain" has now gone to bug/maintence mode and no longer developed since last year.

I did have a foot in both camps, but now I have deleted Proton... tiresome nagging to upgrade...

proclaim hi! I am really interested in migadu. Is it easy to add emails to your customer domain? I can’t seem to find any videos or tutorials on the interface. I’m a proton and simple login user myself
