Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and in the process of trying to learn as much as i can about privacy, security, etc. before installing GrapheneOS. My apologies if this something that's already in the forum (which i'm sure it is).

So right now i'm using the Proton Ecosystem.

My question is, once i install GrapheneOS and then re-install the Proton stuff, will i still be able to get notifications for new emails, etc.?

My other question is about seperate profiles.
I would like to set up 2 profiles on GrapheneOS.
The second one being for using GoogleMaps. I guess sandboxed. I'm not 100% sure what this means. But from what i gather, is it basically allowing me to use GoogleMaps but in exchange being monitored by Google, but only when i'm using this profile. Once i'm done with using Googlemaps, i would switch out of this profile back to the main one.
Is this something that is possible? The reason i'm asking is i'm always in different cities where i'm not familiar with and Googlemaps is very helpful.

Hi, Firstly welcome to GOS forum. Yes to the Proton notifications and as for profiles, while in separate profile its as simple as holding the power button down when finished with your Google Maps and pressing End Session, this will automatically shut that profile down and switch you back to your main one.

Raian once i install GrapheneOS and then re-install the Proton stuff, will i still be able to get notifications for new emails, etc.?

You'll need Google Play for notifications with Proton apps. They do not provide their own push notification service. There's a 3rd party app for ProtonMail notifications, but its fairly limited in what it can do, as far as I'm aware.

is it basically allowing me to use GoogleMaps but in exchange being monitored by Google, but only when i'm using this profile. Once i'm done with using Googlemaps, i would switch out of this profile back to the main one.

Yes, profiles are isolated. You can have a profile for Proton stuff, with Google Play installed. And another profile for Google Maps. Just make sure to use separate Google accounts so there's no link between different profiles/Play installations.

Dumdum profiles are isolated, but persistent hardware IDs (such as MediaDRM) exist and certain system stats (battery level, graphical performance) can aid web tracking, just to note.

If you do not want to use GPS in your owner profile with the Proton apps, then you have to check your mail yourself to open the app. (daily or multiple times a day?)
That is my use case right now I do not want to work with opensource apps in a GPS environment but that is up to you, It is not a big deal. GOS with GPS is a huge improvement anyway over stock Android regarding privacy.

You can also switch to Tutanota mail, this app does not rely on GPS for notifications.

Dumdum Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated!. So when you say i'll need Google Play for notifications for the Proton apps, are you saying i have to have Google Play Services, along with Google Play installed. Having said that, do i need to download my Proton apps from Google Play? Sorry if this comes across as a dumb question.

And then in order to seperate the profiles, you're suggesting to create another "dummy" google account for use in the profile i'll use for let's say Google Maps.

      Hope i understood it correctly!

Raian are you saying i have to have Google Play Services, along with Google Play installed

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I believe the notifications work so long as you have Google Play Store/Services installed, you might need to actually open the Play Store to initiate the background stuff but you won't need to log in (accounts are only for actually installing apps from the Store). Make sure to allow unrestricted battery to Google Play Services as described here.

do i need to download my Proton apps from Google Play

No. I have ProtonMail installed from Github via Obtainium and I still get notifications because of Google Play being installed. The only thing I can think off the top of my head that might prevent notifications is having the apps installed before Google Play, as that often causes apps to not realise that Play is installed. This could be per-app, I can't say for certain if thats the case for Proton apps. A simple reinstall of the Proton apps after Google Play will be enough, if thats the case.

And then in order to seperate the profiles, you're suggesting to create another "dummy" google account for use in the profile i'll use for let's say Google Maps.

Only if you're using Google Play to install any apps. I should have said in my initial comment that using separate accounts is only needed if you're actually using them, otherwise simply initiating Google Play and not logging in will work as stated before.

Dumdum Thanks for clearing that up. So technically i would only need one google sign in since i would only be using GoogleMaps. This is great! I'm really excited to see how things turn out. The whole learning process has been a great experience. Thanks to all on this forum.

Not directly related to your question, but might be useful. If you plan using maps while driving, consider installing your maps app of choice in Private Space profile instead of a regular one (Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Private Space). This way you'll still be able to switch between apps, answer a phone or a messenger app call, have Bluetooth headphones working while still using the maps app simultaneously. Otherwise you'll need to switch between profiles.

Thanks for letting me know! Going to be tackling all this over the weekend
