This phenomenon seems well-attested and repeatable. Might one of you be willing to file an issue on the GrapheneOS issue tracker to make sure the developers are aware? If so, please post a link to the issue here so that others can then add a comment to it.

I had the same problem yesterday with my pixel 8a. Bootloader wouldn't lock.

I had the same problem on my Pixel 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold and Tablet. After encountering the 9-series issue with the 2024120700 Alpha release. I wanted to replace GrapheneOS with the stock OS so that I could reinstall GrapheneOS and be back on the 2024120400 Stable release. I encountered the same bootloader locking error but everything worked out fine in the end and I just instead locked it after reinstalling GrapheneOS on all three devices.

jimbob I had the same issue trying to revert my Pixel 9 Pro XL back to stock Android 15. I tried multiple times but I got the same message.

Fastboot command (flashing lock) failed: 'invalid android images, skip locking'

Reverting back to Android 14 allowed me to lock the bootloader (don't forget to remove the non-stock key first on the GrapheneOS web installer website first!)

Michiel Thanks for filing Issue #4476 and linking to this forum thread.

This sounds like a bug in the stock OS web flashing tool or stock OS factory images. It's not our fault if they don't flash all of the images that are required. We need to know if there's an issue with installing the latest releases of GrapheneOS since Android 15 QPR1 in case the issue also impacts us, but there's nothing for us to do about an issue with the stock OS installation having a bug.

We've asked for people to test replacing the stock OS with the GrapheneOS 2024120900 release on spare devices they have to make sure the installation process still works fine.

GrapheneOS all works fine only from graphene to Stock rom is a problem. I fixed it with flash back to last stable graphene os Version 🤷

Also had an issue today going from GrapheneOS -> Stock (Pixel 6). Flashing QPR2 worked.

Same issue with Pixel 7a . I try three times and always get error msg at the end of locking step .

This definitely appears to be a Google stock OS flashing issue which does not impact GrapheneOS because we do things differently and have our own web installer.

proclaim Maybe there is a simpler method, but I enrolled in the Google Android beta programme and then I unenrolled. After that I received an 'update' to the stock version.

I was having the same problem as OP; I removed the GrapheneOS key but could not re-lock the bootloader after flashing stock OS.

What worked for me was to flash the Beta 1 using the Android Flash Tool--then the tool happily locked my bootloader. Once complete, I used the Android Flash Tool to flash the stable release. The Tool makes you unlock the bootloader to flash, but when it comes time to lock the bootlader again it works!

Weird, but it worked for me. I hope this helps someone in the same pickle as me.
