  • Is GrapheneOS safe? In terms of trust of using a custom ROM with bank apps

  • [deleted]

I know this has been asked a lot, but not exactly the way I'm asking. It might not be the best idea to ask this question in the GrapheneOS forum because I think the response will be obvious, but I can't post in r/GrapheneOS nor r/Privacy since they wish not to be mentioned in Reddit.

I know GrapheneOS is open source and can be audited by anyone, but since I don't have the knowledge and it would be my first time as an adult that I'll be installing a custom ROM I'm concerned and wondering if GrapheneOS is safe. Not in terms of third party safeness, privacy or security, but in terms of trusting the people behind the software. I'm not stating anything about them. I mean, I'm going to be installing bank apps, so I'm concerned if its safe to use them in a custom ROM made by a small group of people instead of a huge multinational company such as Google or Apple, who are a nightmare in terms of privacy, but I can trust them in terms of using my bank apps, and log in with my password and username into personal services while using Android or iOS

Please, bear in mind that I'm not accusing them of anything! Just asking a question that is dancing in my head before installing the OS, which sounds great, but I'm still concerned about it.

Thanks!

GrapheneOS is also constantly audited and their code is used by other projects. If there was anything malicious in there, people would notice pretty fast. The actual security researchers that is.

spring-onion thanks a lot for your reply. Please don't take my initial post in a bad way (which I would understand if you did). It was just a simple doubt, not an intention to bad mouth you or anything. Again, thank you for your reply and your work

splattergames didn't know it was constantly audited. This helps a lot too. Thank you!

[deleted] funny way to think about it, you trust bank won't mishandle your data? You are definitely safer in the hands of GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS is a custom fork of AOSP, but it's a full fledged OS, not a ROM. Have a little more faith in people who have been around for quite a while and have systematically proven they know their stuff.
