Hi from Japan. I want to install Grapheneos on my Pixel 8, but I don't know if it's available in the Japanese version. The model number is GZPF0. Does anyone know if it's possible?

kmj Hello, you can install GrapheneOS on all supported Google Pixel devices, whatever the country, just make sure it's not locked by the operator, so avoid getting it from your mobile operator.

Japanese is available for AOSP (Android Open Source Project), which means that only the parts coming from AOSP will be translated, but not the elements specific to GrapheneOS, which will remain in English. Full translation into several languages for GrapheneOS is planned, but this requires first hiring a professional translator who understands the technical terms correctly.

If you can unlock the bootloader, its likely.
If you have not setup the phone, you could just run through the installation and see how it goes

My 4a5g was the Japanese version and it worked just fine.

For those who are using a Japanese pixel (6 until the latest) can you tell if the shutter sound can be disabled on stock camera app and graphene camera app

      Onion

You can disable camera sounds in GrapheneOS Camera from the dropdown menu button on the top left corner > More Settings > Camera Sounds toggle.

It's nearly identical in Google Camera. Tap on the cog with a small camera on the bottom left corner > More settings > Camera sounds toggle.

I don't think the Pixel model nor the Japanese variant should make a difference as this is an app feature at a software level. I don't even know if the Japanese Pixels change usability to begin with, but I will leave that for someone with more knowledge than me to answer.

yore Japanese Pixels are quit different.

Every phone with a camera sold on Japanese market must have the shutter sound enabled (without a possibility for the user to disable it)

When the first mobile phones with a camera were sold in Japan (early 00s) some men used to take pictures of women's underwear.

Because of this bad behavior, a new law was created with the shutter sound enabled on every new mobile phones sold in Japan

I don't really know if it's embedded firmware or just a software protection that can be easily bypassed
