I've read all of the hate for the pixel tablet. I bought one simply because it runs GOS. The tablet works really well generally. Penoval stylus works beautifully. It's like my phone but bigger and I can write with a stylus and read textbooks and scribble on things. None of the issues that others complain about have affected me.
But DAMN. No vibrate. No haptic feedback while typing. W.T.F google. I NEVER have a device make an audible sound unless it's an alarm. How does anyone type on an onscreen keyboard without physical feedback? It feels awful. I don't want it to make sounds that's just distracting, it's the wrong kind of feedback for a tactile activity like typing. It's not like there wasn't any space in this thing for a motor... Half the shell is empty ffs. And how am I the only one who's got the shits because of it? I wouldn't have even thought to check this out before buying. Like every phone and tablet I've ever used had tactile feedback ability while typing. This one thing has made me hate my purchase. It's also problematic for me as I have severe trauma around privacy so I have very limited option in what I use. And I won't be trapped in Apple's walled garden. It's because of google and apple that there is only the feint illusion of choice in the mobile market. The ONE saving grace for google was the pixel devices (in addition to making android open source), as they run GOS.
I know that's a bit of a rant. But I have quite severe sensory issues and having no physical feedback on an onscreen keyboard is a big issue for me. I am aware of aftermarket keyboards, I may get one, but why would I bother? I may as well just carry around a laptop that's running a real operating system in that case. This just seems like basic functionality that anyone would reasonably expect from a mobile device. Even if they were just marketing it as a media player, people play games on android devices, which would be complete shit in many cases without the device being able to provide physical feedback.
I'm also not super happy that it doesn't have NFC. I suspect they add it only for payments etc. But it means I can't use my yubikeys for TOTP. I have to have my phone next to me any time I need to log in to a service. It's inconvenient AF. I could get a USB C hardware key, but I'd end up trashing the charging port over time.
I'm just frustrated. It's so hard to get usable hardware/software that isn't actively trying to fuck you over. And the services I am comfortable using seem to all be missing basic functionality (proton drive anyone?). Who knows maybe they'll release a new model that isn't shit. I'd sell this thing and buy the new one. But for now I feel like I'm paying for half baked devices that aren't fit for purpose. And the choices are limited.
I'll stop ranting now O_O
