Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS
It could be something about your carrier, also Google has done a few more updates to messages BTW when A lot of people were having problems, and now...
Just tested by downloading Google Messages, RCS was automatically enabled within 5 mins for me. I have done nothing additional to get it to work.
OfflinePuffin I do use sandboxed Google Play Services

83639273 Dude, I've been struggling for months, trying everything, and this is the ONLY thing that worked. Thank you!! Texting some of my iPhone buddies with RCS chats feels surreal, never would have imagined it just a couple years ago.
FYI for anyone reading this: If its not working, download the Google app and give it the same permissions, including device identifiers. Initially OP's method didn't work, but this fixed it for me.
Really sucks Google has made RCS "theirs", but if that's what it takes to get it adopted, oh well... We all know phone carriers don't give enough of a shit to create proper RCS infrastructure
biscuit_tosser_88 still working? no disconnections?
bushraptor still working. Never had a hiccup
biscuit_tosser_88 wow, awesome. I'm trying to make sure I don't start losing RCS once iPhones get RCS next week
bushraptor ah, good. I didn't know they were getting updated next week. Bring able to send full res pictures and files will help me out a lot at work. It's funny, though, how many of my (Android) contacts still haven't been updated to RCS, or they're choosing to not use it.
No issues here. I am using Graphene on my Pixel 9 Pro XL. I do have Google Play Services installed on the Owner prfile and am using Google Messages on the Owner and a User profile without any issues. I have no installed Google Play Services on the User profile. My carriers are T-Mobile USA and Rogers Canada.
LordDrakkon Rogers Canada has been great with their RCS implementation - very few hiccups.
RCS has been working for me since I upgraded to P9P XL at the beginning of the month. All G suite installed, carrier is google fi.
RCS should be live for most to all iPhones at this point!
YAY!
After a year of RCS not working, this did the trick!
(Seemed like it didn't until I double checked my Play Services permissions and found SMS was disabled, likely after last attempt. Once I gave that permission it took less than a minute before I found the SMS in the inbox that the app picked up and used to turn RCS on.)
Thank you to everyone who figured this out!
OfflinePuffin it's about time!

DirtyDan That's a very interresting comparison my own experience. I'm from eastern Europe and most popular brands seem to be Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei. Obviously the majority uses Android. The diminished popularity of iPhones here seems to be from Apple not giving a crap about non-english speaking customers with many features (like Siri). Also majority uses communicators with Messanger being the most popular and WhatsApp close second. What I've noticed is that SMS are used as a more formal way of communication around here, something you do when you message someone you're not well acquainted with. With friends and family practically everyone writes via communicators.
Can confirm, RCS is working with I phones / iOS 18.
NightSky how long does it generally take for the whole population of iPhone people to get an update?
I have no idea. I guess it also depends on those who have manual vs auto updates.
From what I can tell, RCS is not activated in group chats, even though both iphone users have iOS 18 with RCS activated. If I'm not mistaken, RCS does doesn't work in group chats for Android users either. Just an observation.
