nandohyphen1 I couldn't really find a direct answer.
I see two issues that appear quite sufficient:
- If XMPP doesn't support deletion then moderation can't happen, and moderation is necessary, so that would be a show-stopper.
- Adding another protocol means more work for the maintainers, which would make sense only if adding it would dramatically improve the reach of the system.
nandohyphen1 Earlier in this thread @ErnestThornhill said
Their reasoning for not using XMPP was explained (in detail) on Mastodon when they first announced their decision for adding Discord to the list.
I saw this, but two questions.
One, is there a link so I can read this?
There is a link (ErnestThornhill). That link doesn't seem to work, but there is still lots of text in this forum thread discussing message deletion, moderator load, moderation tool quality, CSAM, and perceived popularity of platforms.
Two, do I need an account to read Mastodon stuff?
I don't know if Mastodon has private federated groups, but it definitely has private direct messages. But lots of content is public, for which an account is not required.
Overall, what I see in this thread seems pretty clear:
- Some people like XMPP, which is fine,
- Because spam and CSAM raids are a real issue, if XMPP makes moderation impossible then XMPP will not be pursued no matter how many people like XMPP how much,
- Even if moderation of XMPP is possible, if it's merely difficult compared to the systems already being maintained then that's a big issue,
- Because adding each platform requires real work, if XMPP did have good moderation tools but wouldn't connect a lot of users who wouldn't otherwise be reachable, it might not be worthwhile given current resources.
If that is accurate I really don't see how further discussion would be necessary. I don't know anything about XMPP, but a quick web search turns up XEP 0425, which seems to be marked "Experimental". If that's the situation, then, based on what the GrapheneOS team has clearly explained, XMPP will not be pursued, for good reason, no matter how many people like XMPP how much. Is it the case that XMPP does not support moderator deletion?
