  • Feel like giving up on VoIP - Call quality issues with VoIP.ms and Linphone

Greetings All,
Currently I'm using GrapheneOS on a Pixel 4 and loving it.
I'm trying to configure Linphone for use with voip.ms so that I can use several phone numbers and selectively turn them off and on when needed. Problem is my outbound audio is often choppy or digitized to the person I'm speaking to.

At first I thought it was the carrier. While switching from Mint (T-Mobile) to Tracfone (Verizon) does give me better quality all around (since Verizon is the dominant carrier in my local area) it's still not there yet.

What I've tried so far:

  1. I've switched to the GSM codec as well as lowering my bitrate, however I've found the lowering the bitrate actually makes it worse, so I switched back to 64Kbps.

  2. I've tried adjusting the ABR setting in Linphone, however this seems to have no effect.

  3. I've tried switching to Sipnetic, bit I never could get it to connect. I also don't like the idea of using something close source.

Is there anything else I can / should try? Am I stuck with using wifi if I want clear calling?

Anxious to hear other experiences with trying to use VoIP if possible.

Sorry but I’ve had a similar experience and am searching for a good alternative. I’ve used mysudo in the past but it’s hit/miss behind my always on vpn. Also it requires google play services to be notified of inbound calls/sms. Also they only support a handful of countries and have reportedly shut down user accounts of folks using it behind a vpn in a “non supported” while traveling.

I’m back to using my normal SIM card for legacy voice calls for now, which I really dislike, but I haven’t found a good alternative.

I think some other members have had success with jmp.chat but I have yet to try it. Given the amount of legacy voice minutes I require for work each month, it would be quite expensive.

Are you running a VPN? If you're running a VPN while placing calls you can (sometimes) have some issues with network stability, although it's intermittent, you will especially have issues if you've used up your data plan (even on "unlimited" plans) because you're data is getting throttled so hard.

No VPN, but I am using SRTP/Encryption. I know I haven't reached any data limits yet.

gos1227 sign up with jmp.chat and download the cheogram app and login, I think is how it goes.

gos1227 I use jmp.chat no complaints , its a bit clunky to get setup but use cheogram app and sign up on jmp.chat website . maybe they streamlined the sign up process ?

      a year later

JMP.Chat/Cheogram. The initial set up can be a bit awkward as other have said, but it functions very well with Graphene with no Google services (if that is a priority for you). They also have excellent customer service.

OVH provide a "local landline like" number for France and Belgium for cheap.
Doesn't require ID, only a bank card.
      Usable with any sip client.
      Linphone work fine with it.
