I have a pixel 6a and I was wondering what the best cloud solution is for backing up photos without having Google play services installed, one that is more privacy focused, I don’t mind paying for such service it’s just in wanting to move away from google drive, I take a lot of pet and family photos and want to move away from google services all together hence why I got a pixel and grapheneos to have more control over my data and privacy

malina Nextcloud is oft recommended as a self managed and self hosted solution, Tresorit is a cloud based provider that encrypts dats as standard. However there is also an app called Cryptomator available across platforms which when used gives you all the privacy and security you need whether using purpose built solutions or mainstream services such as Drive, Dropbox etc.

Do you have other computer(s) on which you alreqdy have a backup strategy?

If so, i'd recommend syncthing. We have used it for years to backup phone camera, as well as the all of our folder shares within the family. Private, e2e, free

I have periodically checked back in on hosted nextcloud, but found the options with E2E enabled too expensive, complicated, or from a provider with unclear providence

GrapheneOS supports backups via "Seedvault", which has specific support for Nextcloud integrated. My suggestion is that you either host your own instance of Nextcloud (even on a home internet connection, use a DDNS provider for consistent access), or subscribe to one of the many available suppliers of hosted instances.

It may be that uploading big | inkrementell files to your Nextcloud server with DAVx via WebDAV-Protocol¹ is more reliable than using the Nextcloud-client.
I use DAVx for contacts, calendar, task & deck and the NC-client for files. Talk, news, bookmarks, notes, ... via separate NC-App's.
