Can I use Shelter to setup a Work profile and then install Google Services there - so I can setup my Google FI on this device?

This way - the owner profile remains free of anything google - but I use the phone app/sms app in my work profile with Google FI. Will that even work?

at this time I would ONLY be using googlefi/phone/sms/maps under the work profile.

I would then setup a separate non-sheltered profile (normal user profile) - and use that to install/use google play services for any apps that require it to run... (e.g.:banking apps, travel apps, etc...)

Make sense?

lcalamar if you need to activate eSIM then sandboxed play services will need to be installed in the owner to activate the privileged eSIM management tools.

If not sure you can installed a device management app like Shelter to create the work profile for that purpose so long as you appreciate the environment doesn't offer the same isolation and security that the multiple user option does.

I have deleted the other topic you created as I've covered what would be the only con to some in having to use Play Services in owner to activate and manage the eSIM. Doing this exposes your IMEI to Google but if you bought it direct from them using identifiable means they already can link it to you, there is no evidence they do harvest it but just making you aware.

    For clarification:

    • If I want to use the eSIM I need to install play services in my owner profile - so I can activate privileged eSIM services - correct?

However - if I use a SIM card - (not eSIM), then I don't need eSIM services - correct?

    • if this is the case - then I could likely install Google FI under my work profile with google play services there? Worth Trying?

Another point of clarification is that the work profile (ala Shelter) isn't going to provide the same levels of iso/security that using multiple users??? If that is the case then installing GoogleFI/Privileged eSIM services in the owner profile seems more straightforward.

    Thanks for the help!

      Correct

      You could.

It would indeed be more straight forward. However the work profile would still offer a level of isolation.

lcalamar OK I am done installing GOS with my particular setup.

So here is where I landed.

      • First 'challenge' was I could not initialize Google FI (new setup) in GOS, so I had to revert to stock android. That solved the problem - and when I re-installed GOS - had no issues using Google FI (I am using a SIM card)

      • I originally setup my owner profile w/o google services. I used shelter to setup a work profile to install sandboxed play services - and installed my 'google' apps there (google fi mainly, and signal)

      • I could not figure out how to setup my app defaults so my work-phone and signal were my app defaults (replacing sms w/signal). So I killed the work profile - and re-installed everything under my owner profile - including sandboxed play services, google fi, signal, etc...

      • note: I could not get signal to install w/o play services... tried downloading direct from the signal web site (not using the play store).

As it stands: 100% of everything is in my owner profile. I may setup a multi-user profile and move all my banking and non-google apps there. However - since they require play services - it doesn't seem this would gain anything?

All that said - I've gotten pretty good at flashing GOS and Stock! as I've done it several times today (also restored stock on my old P3 for trade in!)
