I don’t know how it happened, but the Play Store updated itself with a newer version that the one in Apps.

Here is what I get in the Apps screen:

Available version
version 33.9.15-21 [0] [PR] 498467920

Installed version
version 34.0.12-21 [0] [PR] 500233025

Play Services, GSF and GmsCompat are not affected and are on par with the Apps repository.

How can I safely revert the Play Store version to the one in Apps? I saw another similar problem where it was recommended to uninstall and install again both Play Services and Play Store. However, is it not going to break the apps I have installed through the Play Store? Can I just modify the Play Store and leave the others untouched?

Since recently, Play Store became the primary way of updating Play services and Play Store.

Updates through Apps app usually arrive later.

boarim Correct. Play Store and Play Services won't be able to update to an unsupported version, since GmsCompatConfig dictates the max version they can be updated to.

There are also other benefits to doing it through Play Store such as getting language splits for languages not mirrored in the "Apps" app, delta updates which are much smaller in size etc.

Recently I'm getting notifications from GmsCompat re. Google Play Store, see below.
Not sure what I should do, as I granted only Network Permissions for all three Google components and hesitating about "install unknown apps".

    GmsCompat
    Action Required in Play Store

    Google Play Store
For your security, your phone currently
isn't allowed to install unknown apps
from these sources. You can change this
    in Settings

    CANCEL SETTINGS

I remember the "Apps" app delivered an update last week for GPS with its built-in features.

Oggyo It's fine to take the update from Play Store. Also, keep in mind that even if you allow install from unknown sources, it'll only be able to do unattended updates for it and play services, if it tries to install some new app (it won't), it would have to ask first. You're still in control.

        Cool, thanks for the advice.
Looks like Google Play Store updated itself after granting "install unknown apps" permissions to it.

        The result in my observation:

        • GPstore version bumped from ver. 33.9.15-21 to 34.0.12-21.
        • GPservices updated via APPS app from ver. 22.48.14 to 22.50.14
