Cannot unlock phone after restart - keyboard does not appear

After the new Android 16 update and the new UI, I cannot unlock the lock screen after restarting the phone.

When I want to enter my password, the keyboard is behind the input, i.e. behind the blur.

I can't take a screenshot, can't explain it in more detail. Maybe I can take a picture of it with another phone.

I think technically the keyboard loads faster than the lock screen, which is why it's moved to the background, behind the blur.

OrangeMamba is the input method button visible? If so, try switching to the stock keyboard if that's not what's already selected.

Try closing everything with the back gesture, then unlocking the screen again. Hopefully, the keyboard will be visible.

OrangeMamba Oh my. Someone just reported the same issue in the chat rooms. They made the keyboard appear by doing this:

After installing the latest update on my Pixel 9a I came across this issue (specifically after disabling developer mode which may be related):

Reboot device.

Unlock simcard by entering pincode.

Try to enter my alphanumeric password, but the keyboard does not show up.

Try to click on a quick item in the quick toggle menu, the keyboard does not show up.

[Tap on the emergency call button]

Back-out of the emergency call menu.

Keyboard shows up and I can succesfully log-in.

I use the default keyboard and am on the stable channel. I have not checked wheter this issue occurs when my sim card is not in my phone.

OrangeMamba same issue for me on the QPR1 update with my Pixel 8 pro. A reboot solved the problem and keyboard appeared in BFU for the owner profile.

That sounds bad! If you can’t find a way to work around it, I think you’re locked out of your phone. I’m pretty sure that in BFU mode the phone can’t run updates, so even if the devs find out a way to solve the bug, your phone still can’t receive automatic updates.

I know it sounds stupid, but have you tried rebooting the phone?

It is possible to sideload a newer version of the OS BFU, but not an older one because of downgrade protection.

soniaservi as you suggested, rebooting the phone again should solve the problem.

I had that issue with the last release (2025111801), hasn't happened yet on 2025112101. If I enabled the eSIM the keyboard wouldn't appear at the password prompt, disabljng the eSIM instead of unlocking it made the keyboard appear every time.

Had this or a similar issue on a Pixel 7 on stable 2025112101.

I think it's because I didn't log in immediately after booting, and the screen had turned off. Nothing I did would allow the keyboard to pop back onto the screen after I woke up the phone.

Terrified, I rebooted. When it started up again, I immediately tried to log in as soon as I could, and the keyboard popped up. Whew.

Got the same problem. Work around with emergency button works, but the problem persists through a reboot.

Maybe try changing to a number-only PIN, reboot, unlock with the PIN, then set the password again and see if the problem persists?

Have you folks adjusted animation through developer mode? I just read about that may interfere with screenlock.

OrangeMamba I first spoke about this bug, and a workaround, on the 2025111800 thread:

Another problem: a few minutes ago I turned on this Pixel Tablet, and the keyboard on the login screen was blurred (in other words, behind the login screen). No way to type my password. Fixed by turning off, then on, this device again.

That could work. But what if you're blocking USB-C Connections to Charging-Only in the security settings? That would be unfortunate.
