I think this is related to some changes in the battery profile.
As you noticed, the battery life in QPR1 is better, because of it.
Seems like if you don't unlock your device after boot, the AOSP
keyboard might go to deep sleep mode. This is just my theory.
Not so easy to debug it on a production device, rare bug.
