It is strange that you'd find it updating when you wake up, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that the updater isn't messing with your network settings because it doesn't have access to modify that setting.

According to Android docs:

Android also attempts to choose a time when the users aren't using their devices at all.

My best guess is that the updater downloads the update, schedules it with the system, the system waits until you're not using your phone and the battery is charged enough, then it applies the update. You just get to see the end of the updating process when you have to restart your phone (or you set it up to restart itself automatically), and you just see the last part after logging in.

      Mine does that all the time...
      Airplane mode is on at night. As soon as i wake up, the updates starts and drains a good amount of battery.
      Would be really nice to tell the phone to only update when charging and connevted to wifi in my case. Had to disable updates a few times when hiking in order to get a full day of battery when I need it...

        Right now you can restrict to wifi by changing the setting "permitted networks" to unmetered. Other than that, keeping the phone connected to the internet will allow it to update when an update is available. In my experience, updates are almost always set to stable late in the evening (in the Americas) so updates are applied at night for most people.

          When in airplane mode you can still activate internet access like wifi. Make sure that's not happening. For example I often put my phone in airplane mode, and then activate the internet button.

          Airplane mode does not force disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC. It also doesn't prevent using USB internet either. It only force disables cellular. If you enable Wi-Fi during airplane mode, it remembers that you want Wi-Fi enabled.

          That's not how our update client works. It does the installation immediately after the download. It doesn't wait until you're not using the device. We don't set the scheduled job as requiring the device is idle and we don't currently offer the option to enable that as we do with other assorted job scheduling options.

            That's not how the update client works. The only way this would happen is if you still had Wi-Fi enabled. It's possible that the UI doesn't get updated correctly after toggling it on based on the new Android 13 QPR1 airplane mode feature where if you had previously toggled on Wi-Fi it will still be disabled.

              Please check the status of Wi-Fi in the Settings app, not only in the quick settings tray. It's possible there's a bug in the Android 13 QPR1 feature where quick settings isn't always updated to the correct view of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status after enabling airplane mode due to airplane mode no longer disabling them if you previously had them enabled the last time you were in airplane mode.

                Is very similar to my case. I can also report that an update was running when I woke up in the morning.

                I also just checked it again in the system settings. There it looks exactly the same as in the quick settings. Flight mode enabled, WIFI disabled, but still online access.

                Please let me know if I can do anything else or if it's possible to provide any kind of logs from my device, which is still in the same mode the problem appeared to me.
