This battery update was recently address on the GOS Twitter account. Support has "largely stopped for 4th gen (4a included)". I would imagine that the update is unlikely to happen, but as stated in that thread users should upgrade their phone either way.

What a bl..dy joke! I really hope there will be no update on the side of GOS.
It seems to be a marketing move to get rid of old phones and sell new ones from the same brand instead.
rufus nah, Google just rediscovered the issue Apple had around 10 years ago and had to do the same (which they got sued for btw). Better late than never I guess...

Right now in one hand I do have a glass half full of nice tasting water.
In the other my P4a and I don't know if I should keep it or not. G***le tells me my phone is broken allready since I bought it and should be repaired at least now, on warranty.
But in reality there is no chance for me and probably a lot of other people to get it done without paying for it by them self. So whats the benefit? Now I know I should better throw it away because of its risk to catch fire.
This does not make me feel happy about. That's all.

I don't think the project account has said either that there will be a GrapheneOS update for the 4a or that there won't be. And that makes sense to me. For example, perhaps the developers are waiting to see whether the update is firmware, or AOSP, or both. Perhaps Google will release the update to their OS but not to AOSP.

There is a case that the primary threat is posed by malicious actors who, over time, are probably accumulating 4a exploits, and are unlikely to make announcements before deploying them.

I never said that that was the case. Merely that based on the statement from GOS, I (emphasis on "I") would imagine that it is unlikely to happen. Never said that they "will" or "will" not.
zoe True, but the financial damage of buying a new Pixel is higher than the damage those threat actors could do to me.
Only you can put a figure on exploitation cost. But it may not be necessary to compare against the price of a new Pixel. Pixel 6a's still have two years of support left, and 7a's have three (source).
A used device might end up needing a battery replacement, which might be expensive, but an old 4a might need one soon too. And a 4a is arguably more likely to run into some fatal failure (RAM, flash).
New devices are indeed expensive, but they are not the sole alternative to EOL devices.
zoe the a-series of Pixel devices are budget phones.
The Pixel 4A was considered to be one of the best budget smartphones of the 2020 year, being priced at around $400 USD.
I think you have high expectations for a budget device that already outlasted many flagship Android phones from that era.
No one mentioned this but in the linked Google article you can request a free replacement battery or 50 dollars cash or 100 dollars off a new Google device. Might be some upgrade seed money!
So, di I understand right that the battery update is not included in the latest version for the 4a and also will not come in the future?
Does this also mean the update can be "undone" when installing GOS on a 4a that already had the g-update?
