de0u it's always set to off, and changing it to auto doesn't work
Here was the message I got each flight I tried to connect:

Problem with American Airlines wifi
GrapheneOS has heavy problems with open Wifis.
10/10 of the cases I need to check manually the Gateway IP to connect manually via browser to the Wifi-login.
Also scanning a Wifi-QR and instant connect don't work with GrapheneOS. Here I need to scan the code, copy manually the relevant phrase, and manually paste the password to the Wifi-connection
I had no problems connecting last time I flew with them. Did you try resetting network settings from the owner profile in Settings > System > Reset options
?

It sounds like you have the Internet connectivity checks turned off. Try enabling it and it should pull up the login page when you connect.
router99 Were you able to sign in on the captive portal? If not, that would be the reason. You could make sure the connectivity checks are enabled.
Having per connection MAC address randomization on means you will need to log in again after each disconnect/reconnect. Changing the privacy setting to "Use per-network randomized MAC", may help.
Did you try another browsers?

No captive portal. Clicking "sign in" takes me to a page in Vanadium (aainflight dot com).

Yes, Mull, which does not work either.
router99 well for cases like these I have 5 different hardened browsers.
if something cannot be accessed/achieved by one, I go to another until I succeed. The more browsers the bigger the chance :)
I quite often even have to change the default browser for that action...
router99 You may want to double check that the VPN is off, and Block connections without VPN is disabled. You may also try editing the URL and replace https with http and see if that lets it redirect properly.
It does sound like a DNS issue, but you said you already tried turning the private DNS off. May try turning off secure DNS in Vanadium.
It looks like other people on the internet have had issues, so it doesn't look to be GrapheneOS specific.
Honestly AA wifi sucks donkey balls (esp the super old CRJs) and any amount of privacy/security hardening seems to break the login/payment page and general connectivity. I'm actually on an AA flight rn and I can literally watch the little wifi icon appearing and vanishing several times per minute. Taking me several minutes just to write this post Absolutely goofy that they charge out the nose for wifi that basically doesn't work and crumbles under any sort of load.
