  • Best semi-privacy respecting home indoor camera?

I know this is off topic, but I need an indoor camera for a close relative that would need to connect to the internet to provide a surveillance feed.

It needs to be at least 1080p, have audio relay, and be reasonably secure and private. What would be my best option other than making a surveillance system from scratch, old camera hardware and DVR? I'm also not looking for something extremely expensive.

It needs to do it's thing, not store the data in the cloud or if it does have acceptable privacy/security practices etc. It would also be good if it had a speaker and if it could be found in the EU.

So to recap,

  • simple
  • not too expensive
  • not privacy invasive
  • reasonably secure
  • 1080p with microphone

Thank you.

I am no camera expert but a few question comes to mind.

  • Wired or wireless
  • Power source
  • Cloud storage or not

I really can't speak about firmware quality but one brand that seems to offer flexible options and that won't appear and disappear out of nowhere is Lorex. For a project that never ended up not happening. I am not sure how easy they are to get in Europe or what you mean by not too expensive. For a brand that is genuinely in the camera business I think they offer options that are not terribly expensive.

If you go wired I think that PoE can be great and simplify a few things. But do your own research. You might need a switch to provide PoE for example.

Every camera I've been able to find is a total privacy and security fail. The only thing I can recommend is that you find any camera that supports rtsp, and connect it to a PRIVATE network. Have a server running zoneminder between the private network and a public network so you can access the zoneminder server.
