Hey,
I need to get my phone repaired, and am kinda scared that they break it. I backed up my whole phone with Seedvault, but didn't have success with some apps, including whatsapp. Now, how do I backup my whatsapp data? I cannot access the root folder on Graphene. I now connected my google account to Whatsapp and installed Drive to back it up into the drive, that doesn't work either for some reason (no error, just it showing me that the last backup was "never" and the last local backup was a minute ago). I didn't find anything on this.

So, how would I be able to backup my whatsapp? How did you do it? I'm in a hurry to get my phone repaired right now and I already spent the whole day figuring out how to do it.

Picture of my Whatsapp menu maybe (not neccessary to see, since I explained it above)

I'm on a Pixel 4a (don't think that's too relevant in that case though?)

Any help is welcome.
Thank you

nilsfbx For the future, you need to install WhatsApp AFTER installing Play Services + Google Drive and after logging into your google account. Backups will work normally after that. Sometimes this means re-installing Google apps and logging back in. (If you don't care about Google Drive backups, then WhatsApp works perfectly fine without Play Services).

Similar issues will happen with other apps that expect Google apps to be pre-installed, such as Google Contacts. Kind of wish this was mentioned somewhere so other GrapheneOS users don't keep running into these problems.

Since this means you'll need to re-install WhatsApp in order to get Google Drive backups to work, the issue of how to backup your current history still stands. I'll leave it to someone else to see how to do a local backup. I think it's still possible, but I haven't had luck in doing it in a few years, even on stock.

If you can't get local backups to work, if you have a separate device, you can try first transferring your message history to that device. Then either set up backups on that device or transfer it back to your current device after logging into your google account like I described earlier.

Also, hopefully it doesn't come to this, but in case you're unable to get the backup working, WhatsApp allows you to export chat histories for each chat, which will include a .txt file of the messages as well as all of the media for that chat.

Max-Zorin Thank you for your help. I already have the folder structure shown in the article though, problem is that I am not able to copy anything from inside the android folder onto my computer on Graphene. How are you able to copy the Whatsapp folder inside the Android folder to back it up?

Regarding copying: did you change to file transfer after plugging in?
Afterwards your Grapahene Pixel should behave like any connected USB device either full folder structure access

I would recommend to switch to signal btw. All good WhatsApp features are taken from Signal.

Max-Zorin Yes I do. But trying to backup anything inside the 'Android' folder will result in nothing happening. I also tried Localsend and when trying to send anything from the Android folder it just reacts by the app having a blackscreen, probably due to the same reason it doesn't work when plugged into the computer.
