I was using the default messaging app, and with the updates over the last 2 weeks, the default messaging app stopped working. I am unable to send or receive sms messages. It is not disabled and I need an sms application to receive messages. Any help anyone can provide to restore the current messaging application without doing a factory reset, or if there is another sms application that works? Please please help.

pboogers did you try disable and enable it? And/or "force stop" before a reboot?

There a lot of SMS apps out there... Fossify SMS seems a solid choice

de0u If you move the SIM card to a different device, does that device receive SMS?

also a solid question and worth trying BEFORE installing an alternative but AFTER having the standard app disabled and re-enabled and after a forced stop. (and maybe stuff like cache cleaning) and a re-boot.

ILIKETRAINS The disable button is greyed out. I force quite the messaging app and I restarted the phone. Messaging still does not work. When I get home I am going to put the sim card in my previous phone and try that.

Try popping out your sim and restarting your device then pop it back in. Also what carrier are you on?
If you are looking for a solid SMS app I would recommend Google messages. I know it's a Google app, but it's solid for SMS and RCS "if your carrier supports it" & if you set up Google Play services through the GOS app store.

      a month later

Mine did the same. It seems the new android 15 and the messaging app are not compatible. I have tried everything except reinstall grapheneOS. I needed messages coming in so I opted for QKSMS app and seems to work very well.

Chucky Yep... I've been using QKSMS for over 12 months with no issues and after todays Alpha A15 update it is still working fine.

I had to download it because the update is not compatible with messaging. I find I like QKsms even better

The Messaging app issue for me has been partially fixed for me. I can now receive a text message from a person as well as group chats but I still cannot send any messages using the Messaging app as well as QKSMS. I have not touched any settings outside of selecting QKSMS as my default SMS app. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It is probable the issues are not related to Messaging client itself but likely to incorrect sms settings, relevant permissions not granted or other global settings affecting this.

DeletedUser69 The fact that my issue was partially fixed by the updates that followed the initial Android 15 release suggests otherwise. If you think my issue is likely due to something else, what SMS setting, relevant permissions and/or global setting adjustments do you suggest?

It's been over three years since the QKSMS app has received any updates. Additionally, F-Droid has archived the QKSMS app, as you can see here. However, there is an updated fork called QUIK SMS that aims to revive and continue the QKSMS project

Another open-source SMS app you may want to consider is Fossify SMS Messenger

Litmus9 Thanks for your post. Appreciated! I'll check them out...
