Without making a stance on any of this and trying to be netural and informational about the subject:

They advocate for far-left leaning things.

          m4ri0g No. Firstly that user can't respond because they are deleted. Secondly, please refer to my post above. Look into their politics yourself if you want but this is not a political debate forum. This is my last post on this. Lets get back to the technical discussion.

            anon1 Why do you see them as shady? I think they are far more trustworthy than the other options.

                Thank you for the information. I've been concerned about a few other things with them anyways and been pretty happy with Tuta and mullvad instead tbh

                      It is best if claims about entities having taken some action are accompanied by some specific support, such as citing a source.

                      Otherwise I could write something like "I heard that discussion forum users whose usernames are just a sequence of zeroes are generally crypto thieves".

                          My problem with Proton is that they are trying to hold as much central power in the "privacy community" as possible. They are also making it harder to avoid them because they are buying up other privacy companies. They also do everything but they are not the best at anything because they don't have a central focus. I take issue with the mindset that gainig users is more important than improving the existing services they offer.

                          They handed over their customer's data which was not much, just the IP number, in this case it was enough to track him down though. I wonder if it's permittable for email servers to delete their logs like they do with vpn servers.

                                      Viewpoint0232 HA! They have been saying "soon" for so many years. Just like proton does with certain features. it will never happen.

                                      Every "privacy" centric company is basically forced (yes, forced, you know what i mean) to do penance by giving up SOME kind of key protection. For Proton it's recovery info and no monero, for Mullvad it's no multihop for android. For Signal for a long time it was blasting your phone number everywhere and still is downloading only from google play, these kinds of things.

                                            anon1 I do not believe that is a useful interpretation especially when Mullvad is innovating with features like DAITA. Feature sets is a valid point of comparison when evaluating products but that requires fairly acknowledging the advantages and disadvantages of the competing products and/or services.

                                              anon1 Multi hop is a feature barely used by most people, so they'll probably only implement it later. Its not something nefarious.
