  • Graphene OS intermittently fails to ring for incoming calls

GrapheneOS

Hi!
Non-native speaker here, please excuse my language. Not trying to be rude, just summing up stuff from what I've seen this past month.

The new issue that has been bugging everyone since March - it IS a Pixel issue.
I and many others are having this issue as well.
Before March 14, I could use WiFi Calling and VoLTE just fine with my phone/sim. My carrier supports it. Been using GOS on my P7 from day 1 without any issues. This new call drop issue started happening the day I updated my phone with March 14 update.

I have another device(non-pixel) using the same sim card, calls(VoLTE and WiFi calling both) and text messages work fine without any issues. So yes, currently using an iPhone/any other backup device will help!
I also opened a service request with my ISP, went to their office and spent a few hours, but they couldn't troubleshoot anything and concluded that it's a device issue (albeit it felt like a generic - "we've checked everything, and it's not an issue from our side, so must be your phone" response)

From what I've seen it is affecting phones from P6a to P8P. It is very random though, since not everyone is seeing the issue.
I have a friend using P7 who is unaffected, a friend using P8 who is affected by the issue. Both using Stock OS, and they have the same carrier as mine.

Again, to be clear - we are not saying this particular thing is a Graphene issue. Since a lot of people using Stock OS are also reporting this issue. But since the latest release notes mentioned something about carrier config, we got our hopes up that the update could potentially fix the upstream issue

There has been no official response from Google yet. I keep opening these links every day, only to find more affected people but no fixes :(

Edit:
I'm happy to work with a dev to help debug this issue if needed.

Edit 2:
For those affected, this is a temporary fix that works for me - https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/11866-pixel-8-dual-sim-physical-sim-no-calls/11
Doesn't work for everyone though, so fingers crossed!

I appreciate the work you did in summarizing the issue and helping pinpoint it to being device specific.

Not sure why @GrapheneOS seemed to believe it’s not possible for this to be a pixel specific issue but would love if they could close the loop and acknowledge it’s possible/likely this isn’t carrier specific as they claimed. This isn’t an attack on graphene os in any way, but rather about the hardware that graphene of course does not produce.

The first time I encountered this issue was actually already back in December last year. Suddenly a notification of a missed call, although the phone didn't ring and the call should have gone through. Since I rarely get any calls and didn't notice anything unusual I didn't think much about it. It once happened again in February.

Just now after reading a few fix suggestions, I disabled "4G Calling" (I assume that's what my carrier calls VoLTE). Wi-Fi calling wasn't enabled in the first place. And then I could no longer receive test-calls nor make outgoing calls. But I've been using LTE-only mode and had "Allow 2G" disabled. Only after changing both (I tried changing only either), test-calls worked again normally. I guess this might be expected, but I hadn't given it any thought before.

I've re-enabled "4G Calling" and hope that without LTE-only mode and with "Allow 2G" enabled this issue won't reappear.

I was unable to make calls without VoLTE turned on so decided to re-enable that and WiFi calling. No issues in 2 days.

This happened to me again today. It is frustrating because I don´t receive many calls. The ones I do receive are generally very important and 50% they fail to reach me as I only either get a notification that I missed a call or simply receive an sms telling me that I missed it. The phone was in front of me on my desk the whole day...

Pixel 7 Pro, on 2024042100 which includes the AP1A.240405.002.B1 update from upstream Android.

Still experiencing calls straight to voicemail, but only sometimes. I haven't identified a pattern of which callers work, or don't work.

    Things I've tried:

A power-off, remove SIM, wait 2 minutes, reinsert SIM, power-on cycle suggested by my carrier (Telus).

Turning off 5G by setting the option to LTE.
    Reset Mobile Networking option.

Ok. My problem seems to have been I had turned on "Do Not Disturb" mode in the phone app.

Coming from an LG G7 Thinq, where DND is an OS-level item that affects all notifications, I had been unable to find the same OS-level DND on my Pixel 7 Pro, and ended up enabling the DND in the phone app when I found it. I thought it would turn off automatically I think, like the OS-level version.

This explains why things sometimes worked and sometimes didn't; certain contacts are starred and certain aren't.

jagorom515 It doesn't change that these are carrier bugs. New releases of AOSP / stock OS can work around more of them but they are carrier bugs.

        GrapheneOS
A Google software update caused the issue
A Google software update fixed the issue

My phone was working fine until March 13
My phone was broken after March 14
My phone was working fine again after April 22

I'm not sure where a carrier bug fits in here sir/mam. It feels like it was more of a modem bug introduced by an UPDATE (March 14) and not a change in my carrier. The Apr 20 update, which had the vendor update to AP1A.240405.002.B1, seems to have fixed that modem bug.

I'm not very tech literate, so please forgive me if we are both talking about the same thing and I am being too dense about it, but it felt like you were denying that the March Google Update was not responsible for the issue.

Again to be clear, I am not saying it was a Graphene issue or anything. It clearly was an upstream problem given the amount of non-GOS users facing this issue.
I'm a big fan of all the work you folks do and I love using the OS. Thank you!

          5 days later

Just today my 6a experienced the "call straight to voicemail" problem and also could not make or receive any calls. I have ONLY one profile and am updated to the latest OS version. This is the first time I have ever seen this. I just Reset Mobile Network Settings ( Settings/System/Reset Options/Reset Mobile Network Settings) then rebooted the 6a and everything worked properly.

            23 days later

I had the exactly the same problem and like brookie229 and magic happend. It works!!!
My phone is a Pixel 8 Pro. I love this OS!!!

            11 days later

I experienced this 3 times this week. I reset the network settings and didn't touch it since. But today I got 2 calls from same guy. 3 minutes apart. 2nd one was not received. I'm on newest gos version. Pixel 8

brookie229 hi i tried your method, worked with the previous version, 1 week no issues, then updated to 06500 and back to no calls, phone is 8Pro

Same issue for me, clean install pixel 8 pro. I can make calls but when trying to call the phone, no ringing, no notification, nothing, just goes directly to voicemail.

So after trying to get the phone working every which way I knew I ended up returning to stock Google build, tested phone and it worked immediately, flashed lineage, worked immediately and has continued to. Is there an actual known issue that I can keep an eye on the change logs to know if/ when it's fixed?

I've had intermittent issues with incoming calls this month.
Not sure if might be something to do with adding more user profiles or my carrier who recently sent me a new SIM.

New build was released I see, noting in the change logs about phone not working but was wondering if anyone has tried it? My issue was incoming calls wouldn't work at all which is a piety basic requirement for me. If the new build solved the issue I'd love to hear that.
