Every day my phone freezes roughly since the Android 14 GrapheneOS update, generally after I use some random app (Beeper or Instagram, for instance). It briefly freezes and the screen becomes unresponsive, and then the screen goes black, like a shut down.

And then I cannot turn it on again for a few minutes. Nothing works, not even charging it or using hard reset combinations. It only comes back after a few minutes with a hard reset (I can't quite understand exactly why and how it comes back only several minutes later -- I don't see a clear pattern).

This process happens at least once a day.

Thoughts?

abbluiz This might be a possibility too: https://github.com/GrapheneOS/os-issue-tracker/issues/1857

The comments on that issue suggest some things to check -- for example, if a call is placed to the device when the screen is black and unresponsive causes ringing or vibration, then it may well be that issue. But if the device is really powering off a hardware problem might be more likely.

If you believe you have the problem discussed in that issue, please try to collect system logs when it's frozen. If you would like somebody to talk you through that once, please contact the project via Matrix.

abbluiz I have 2 Pixel 7s with Graphenos and one Pixel 7 has the same problem with freezing after an update pops up in the Google Play Store and I installed it too quickly by clicking without reading. The problems started there. Every time I opened a contact in my Signal Messenger to write to them, I had a banner saying that the signal wasn't working properly and they wanted a diagnostic report to analyze it. I was only able to free myself from freeze by holding the Shut Down button for at least 12-13 seconds and opening a window for half a second (which looked different than the standard graphenos shutdown layout) where the "Restart" button could be seen. I had to click on this with a quick reflex, otherwise I would be back in front of the freeze screen where nothing worked.

Only a completely new graphenos flash helped and fixed this phänomen. I also recommend switching to the Pixel 8, as you can activate memory tagging only on the 8 series for more hardening memory security (see matchboxbananasyngie's post "MTE support status for GrapheneOS")

That's why I'm going to buy a Pixel 8 tomorrow, remove all sensors and then flash it to activate MTE support for even tougher security.

Otherwise you can re-flash once, it solved the problems for me.

abbluiz Both of my P6 did this, they had known hardware issues. My P7A has been flawless thus far.
