Hi all

Newbie to Grapheneos here. I have the quick open camera problem that's been mentioned on this forum many times but I think I have a slight variation after trying out lots of the suggested fixes. I am on Grapheneos Android 13 on a Pixel 7a and I've installed Google Camera in addition to the Grapheneos stock camera.

Here are the settings I've checked:

  • Settings > Security > Allow camera access when the device is locked > ON
  • Settings > System > Gestures > Quickly open Camera > ON
  • Settings > Apps > All apps > [Grapheneos] Camera > Open by default, the only option here is to toggle 'Open supported links' - I cannot seem to clear any preferences.
  • Settings > Apps > All apps > Camera [Google] Camera> Open by default > Clear default preferences
  • [Quick Tile] > Camera > [ON]

Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. With screen unlocked, double press power button
  2. Dialogue pops up asking me which Camera app to use. It allows me to select either Camera app and you can (for either) set it to 'Just once' or 'Always'. I Select [Google] Camera and 'Always'.
  3. [Google] Camera opens fine
  4. Close/navigate away from [Google] Camera
  5. With screen still unlocked, double press power button
  6. [Google] Camera comes on as expected
  7. Close/navigate away from [Google] Camera
  8. Lock screen
  9. With screen locked, double press power button
  10. Unlock with PIN/fingerprint (no camera app pops up until the device is unlocked)
  11. Dialogue pops up, this time [Grapheneos] Camera is the 'primary' option for which you can select 'Just once' or 'Always', while [Google] Camera is secondary for which you cannot select 'Just once' or 'Always'.
  12. Select [Google] Camera from the dialogue
  13. [Google] Camera opens
  14. Repeats steps 8 and 9
  15. Same thing happens - device must be unlocked and then the choose camera dialogue pops up with the [Grapheneos] Camera as the 'primary' option

Is there any way to make [Google] Camera open when double pressing the power button without having to unlock the device please?

Thanks!

Hm, weird. For me it works as expected on P7

splice0370 Is there any way to make [Google] Camera open when double pressing the power button without having to unlock the device please?

Yes, absolutely. After double pressing the power button, and selecting to always open the Google Camera app, it should work fine on subsequent occasions. Not sure if it's required, but I suggest double pressing the power button whilst the phone is unlocked to be able to select the appropriate option.

Repeat the process whilst the phone is unlocked to be able to set Google Camera as always open.

If you're still having issues, you can clear all open by defaults settings for the GrapheneOS Camera app, in its app info. That might also help.

Thanks everyone. So my phone had an update just yesterday and it's fixed now. Set Google Camera to open always when phone is unlocked, lock the screen, do the same again (unlocking the screen to finish the process).

    Thanks!

Not solved for me with Pixel 8 and last GOS installed. Same issue with the same 2 camera apps and after all those cases been tested.

A step back in these last GOS updates or... Any idea?

      Solved for me HERE

The thing is to turn "allow camera access when the device is locked" ON... in MAIN PROFILE!!! , mostly because there's no such option available on the other profiles. So make to turn on these 2 options:

      1. Settings > Security > Allow camera access when the device is locked > ON.
      2. Settings > System > Gestures > Quickly open Camera > ON.
