I use the Cheogram app with JMP.chat. Works well and is constantly being worked on.
VOIP App recommendations
Thank you for the recmondations.
panopticon
I see that Cheogram doesn't have a dial pad for outgoing calls for a jmp # unless I'm missing something.
Qwerty
Thank you for this info, I'm new to this app. Have you had any connection issues when dialing out after adding the calling account. It's hit or miss for me after trying several calls. maybe one out of 4 calls connect. depending on the number dialed. Some don't connect at all. I just noticed there is a sip option in cheogram, would this be more reliable, and advantages or disadvantages using the sip option?
Probably a stupid question, but what does “adding the calling account” entail?
I’d like to use Jmp but thought the whole syntax of adding callers to dial or text was too hard for daily driver use.
Not a stupid question friend, by adding your xmpp address as a calling account allows you to use the GOS phone app/ dial pad to make calls like a normal phone, But untill there is an update for android you will have to reselect your account after every boot which isn't a bid deal for the benefit it does. How you do it is go to settings in the actual phone app, select calls tab, select calling accounts, and select your xmpp address.
mommy you can get another dialer app to replace the default and not have to deal with the bug of having to reset your calling account to your XMPP account after every restart.
panopticon do you have a recommendation? Not all dialers allow to reset calling account.
chuck I'm using ACR Phone by NLL from Aurora store with the ACR Phone Helper from apk mirror using accessability settings so I can record calls. I have network access revoked but its likely not the best solution from a privacy security perspective.

I would like to bump this thread again... Anyone have any luck with VOIP/SIP apps? Do the PUSH notifications work properly?
I'm considering Acrobits Groundwire, Sessiontalk and Zoiper at the moment.
i really wanted to use My Sudo but it doesn't look like it works well. Their support doesn't have any real experience with GrapheneOS
I would love to hear from people wo have tried these.
SEE I'm using phone.com without Google Play. I don't get push notifications but I have phone.com forward the calls to my sim number. I use this for business so its important that calls come through.
For personal texting and calling I use Signal so I don't rely on Google notifications for that.

I’ve been using Jmp.chat and their Cheogram app for a couple months now. Works pretty flawlessly :) side benefit, Jmp is non kyc
Also, don’t forget to update your dialer/phone app to automatically use the Jmp account to make calls. Very nice integration so you don’t even notice you’re using Jmp unless you get a legacy sms (that you’ll see in the Cheogram app)
Shameless plug, let me know if you’d like a referral link to Jmp and I think they give you a free month to try out
SaguaroPelikan Thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't thought of forwarding the VOIP numbers to a SIM. Not a bad idea. I would really like to get away from a SIM eventually though.
applesbana This could be a good option if it works well. Yeah I would take a referral code... It would give me a chance to see if I can get it to work for me. Thanks.
Still curious if anyone has had any luck with I'm considering Acrobits Groundwire, Sessiontalk and Zoiper. Not sure if you can get the push notifications.
I also use ACR Phone. It replaces the default dialer and integrates sip accounts.
Works great so far, you can try for free or pay if you need all features.
But it is closed source.
Yeah, give it a shot. I tried mysudo in the past but had issues with it while traveling overseas. They limit usage to a select few countries.
The referral code is: BBB7KNQQ

So follow-up on my setup (SIP/VOIP provider VOIP.ms; Softphone app Linphone):
I ended up going with VOIP.ms for the SIP provider (sorry @applesbana ). They are Canadian and have great chat service and detailed setup instructions and videos. Also from Montreal. Rates really good. Unfortunately KYC so I had to give them everything.
I have installed and failed with the following Softphone apps: Session Talk, ACR Phone and Bria Mobile apps.
ACR phone - calling worked fine; couldn't see any SMS functionality (my oversight),
Session Talk - calling worked fine; SMS didn't work properly - I would see the notification but couldn't access the SMS or send back.
Bria - couldn't get the app going because couldn't register with payment details as I downloaded anonymously in Aurora store.
I have managed to setup Linphone as my Softphone app. Push notifications working and I can receive/send calls and SMS so far.
I'll update again after I have been using if for a bit. Thanks to everyone who chipped in!
So I'm a month into it and I has to say I am pretty happy so far. VOIP.ms app is working really well and push notifications work fine with GrapheneOS. There is a bit of a delay receiving messages to VOIP.ms app (less than a minute) which is fine with me. I still receive the messages to Linphone first so I get the message notification twice. As I mentioned, Linphone doesn't display the SMS properly or else I wouldn't need VOIP.ms app at all. Linphone is fine for calling though. Still no MMS functionality, however VOIP.ms app adds a link to any MMS content. There was a problem with a recent update from VOIP.ms however the owner of VOIP.ms app Michael Kourlas fixed almost immediately and VOIP.ms communicated the issue well after the fact. IMO it would be great if VOIP.ms could work with Kourlas or someone else to create a full service app that works well with VOIP.ms and included SMS, MMS and calling (with good security/privacy/encryption.
