  • Just installed GrapheneOS - Have some newbie questions!

So far, so good with GrapheneOS on PIxel 6a. First time using ROMs and everything went smoothly. However, after using it for a full day, I have some questions I'm hoping more seasoned users can answer for me!:

  1. I'm using TorGuard VPN and have set up multiple profiles. On at least 2 of the profiles, I'd like to surf the web as well as view youtube videos. It looks like I must install TorGuard Android client on BOTH profiles. I test on profile 1, and can load web pages fine. However, once I switch from that profile the other, leaving TorGuard VPN on in the 1st profile, it looks like it's causing TorGuard not to work on the 2nd profile, as I cannot connect to any web pages at all. If I go back to profile 1, disconnect TorGuard VPN, then go to profile 2 and establish a VPN session, I can connect to web pages on profile 2 just fine. It also seems that if I exit profile 1, that doesn't seem good enough, as I still cannot connect to web pages from profile 2. Seems I need to go to profile 1 and disconnect first in order for things to work right. I have TorGuard VPN client set to auto-connect , by the way.

Is this the only way to do it (short of using work and personal profiles in the same user account using one of those programs that isolates things for you within the same user account)?

  1. When I first boot up my phone, there's a message at bottom about how I'm booting into a different OS and there's a link provided for more information. Is this normal?

  2. Am I able to receive calls and texts on profiles other than the original administrator one? it seems that when I'm in a different profile, I don't get those texts or calls.

  3. is there a utility that shows all of data sent in/out of the phone, so I can see what the traffic is like, and whether Graphene is working as it should?

  4. Has anyone run into an odd slowdown/temporary freeze when switching from settings and swiping up to leave it, when you have multiple profiles active?

Thanks!

    ehb Welcome to GrapheneOS! 🤗

    1. Does your VPN provider / plan limits the number of connections? Each open profile will establish their own connection.

    2. Yes that's how it should be.

    3. You need to enable a toggle for SMS/calls in the profile settings

    4. Dunno about an app to that, sorry... The proper way would be not using an app anyway but MITM the whole phone on another device like a router.

    5. Yes, this may happen sometimes, most likely an upstream bug in AOSP

evalda Hello, and thanks for these answers. I think answers to questions 2 and 3 should be made more available since many new users may have the same demands.

Eirikr70 for 2 Google outlines it here:

Communicating Verified Boot state to users
After determining the boot state of a device, you need to communicate that state to the user. If the device doesn't have any issues, then proceed without displaying anything. Verified Boot issues fall into these categories:

        • YELLOW: Warning screen for LOCKED devices with custom root of trust set
        • ORANGE: Warning screen for UNLOCKED devices
        • RED (eio): Warning screen for dm-verity corruption
        • RED (no os found): No valid OS found
