  • Recommened way of migrating from stock android to grapheneOS?

Today I tried to finally switch over to GrapheneOS since I got a new Pixel to replace my old one. Installation/Flashing was a breeze but upon setting up the new device I realized that the usual "restore from your old phone" option is not available (which totally makes sense in hindsight). Having to download apps again wouldn't be that much of a hassle (although app data would be kinda nice) but transferring call history, sms, settings, wifis, images etc. would be a bit of an annoyance for me.

Searching the forum and other resources I've read that seedvault was previously used to be a replacement for this but is not supported anymore.

Is there a recommended way of restoring said data from an old phone running stock android or is one expected to do a clean install?

Thanks in advance!

To be clear re: Seedvault, Seedvault only allows restoring from Seedvault backups, so you'd need to be going from one OS that uses Seedvault to another for it to work.

GrapheneOS still uses Seedvault, but the project realizes that it has a lot of shortcomings so the approach that it will take in the future is completely replacing it with something built in-house that will support a lot more than Seedvault does and be much more reliable.

I know you won't like this answer, but my suggestion would be to do move everything over manually.

dazinism I have used it. It works well. Just remember to flip airplane mode off when restoring SMS/MMS, then back on!

architekt I made the transition without installing anything, which allowed me to become aware of the applications I really needed

      It is what it is.
A fresh start makes sense kinda.

Just spent a few hours doing everything manually and successfully switches over :)
