  • Google Assistant stops working every few hours

Before I get roasted about using Google services, I'm not using GrapheneOS for its privacy/security features. I have a Pixel 7 Pro, and I had very specific bugs in the stock OS that were resolved by loading GrapheneOS (but not any of the ROMs), and the features of GrapheneOS are just a bonus for me.

So, I've installed all the Google services and apps that I use, including the Google app. I had it set up with all the correct permissions and battery exemptions, and it looked like it was working fine. However, after several hours, swiping from the bottom of the screen no longer launched the assistant. I also have a Google widget on my home screen (Nova Launcher), with a dedicated button to launch the assistant, and that stopped working as well.

When I went into the phone settings, and checked the default assistant app, it was set to Google, just as it was supposed to. But to fix this problem, I had to change that settings to "None", and then change it back to "Google". That immediately made it work again. This has happened every day since I installed GrapheneOS, and it's getting pretty annoying.

Is there some kind of a setting that I'm missing? Or is it just a bug (in which case, can it be fixed)?

I am sorry I can´t help and I hope someone else might have a hint for you. I just wanted to comment on this part. Unlike some other online privacy platforms, no one here will "roast you for using Google services". It´s your phone, you install whatever is suitable for you, and I am sure everyone will help you as much as they can to fix your problems regardless :) !
Again, I hope someone will be able to help with your problem!

did you found any fix? It always need to be deselected and selected as voice assistant again when i open the profile where it is installed :(

randomname If this is very repeatable (esp. if it is reproducible by somebody else) it might make sense to try the GrapheneOS Matrix channel or to file an issue on the GrapheneOS GitHub site. Please collect version numbers for everything and prepare exact reproduction steps starting from a fresh profile.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll file an issue on Github. It's gotten slightly better better on the latest couple of builds -- it still "breaks" after every reboot, but it now prompts me to set Google as the default assistant (with a link directly to those settings). I still have to change is to "None", and then back to "Google", but it saves me a few steps to get there

i found a workaround for my issue , you need to install their Assistant app even if it's just a shortcut and it do not include the assistant, then de-select and re-select google assistant in Default Apps and now it is persisting between profiles sessions as it should, it probably fix your similar issue too Borisb13

Was this issue resolved? Anyone know if the workaround works and what 'THEIR' Assistant app refers to?
I seem to have the same issue where the assistant stops working every two hours and you need choose no assistant followed by google assistant again to make it work.
