csis01 I don't have time to prove the obvious, and remember that you recommended a less secure and private email that uses FCM for notifications too and is based in Russia.

[deleted] and this why I am inclined to use services or their alternatives that are in no way connected to either Google or other Big Tech such as Meta and MS and that includes notification service. Yes, at some cost to convenience. Not 100% there but on a good way.

@csis01 You can disagree with someone, but the way you're going about it is just unfriendly and unproductive. Please do better. We don't have to like each other, but let's at least be decent enough to have a conversation without it devolving into whatever this has.

I will have to close the thread if we can't keep things civil, which is a shame.

If the same people are causing trouble and escalating things time and time again, we'll be forced to take action.

Please be nice to one another, even if you don't agree with them.

Without taking sides well said! Lets keep this forum civil and as positive as we possibly can. That way everyone can benefit and it stays unique!

As bizarre as it might sound but using a Russian email address might be useful in some scenarios (absolutely not as a main email address though).

They have an email service called Mail.Ru that allows to create unlimited aliases with custom names (e.g. john_smith@mail.ru). Google Translate is our friend in this journey xD

Its possible to use it for burner emails (public hotspots or other websites where we just need an account without providing any personal information) instead of paying for an additional alias with our secure email provider.

Obviously, this is not good to use with anything that has our private information as we all know the chances are very high that each email is scanned by Russian surveillance and they can access the email account and read emails anytime, but is quite useful for burner emails for accounts with no personal information.

For the main email address, its (as usual) the well-known list of trusted email providers - Proton, Posteo, Tutanota, Mailbox, org and Startmail.

Volen in a way this is an interesting thought. I'd rather have an enemy who admits that they hate me, than a friend who secretly puts me down.

          • [deleted]

Volen I've always used yandex mail, never had a problem with it. You are quite right to take a private mail from proton but that is only your choice.👌

          • [deleted]

The proton servers are very well secured since they are located in the Swiss mountains but your privacy is not protected more than that if your data is not encrypted. I remind you that the swiss are on european soil and that they are legally obliged to cooperate with their allies.

            [deleted]

This is correct and I agree.

Emails are not private by design - even if you encrypt your whole mailbox, still, 99% of users have no idea about PGP and are not wiling to setup one just to communicate with you. Not saying that many services are actually automated, for example, when you book a driving test, or receive a bill from your utility company.

So once you send an unencrypted email to anyone, or they will send you an unencrypted email, it is going to be scanned anyway on its way, no matter how secure or private your own mailbox is. Imagine getting an email from your broadband company, it clearly has your name and account number so Big Brother will know your name, that you own this email account and that you have an account with the provider in question.

Also, we have absolutely no control on other party's email account - if they use any privacy offending service, then their emails (including the ones you sent to them) are going to be scanned anyway. Or worse - if their email account will be hacked then the hacker will be able to see our email sent to them. Funny enough, not everyone is bothering or know how to secure their accounts so many accounts do get hacked from time to time,

So at this point our main advantage in using a secure email provider is that the provider itself is not going to scan our emails for profiling, marketing, etc. Everything beyond that is very hard to achieve and is most likely unrealistic unless both parties use PGP and a good, secure email provider.

            [deleted]

            This is also true.

An advantage of this approach is that Russian intelligence doesn't care about marketing, selling your data, getting your habits or anything like that (they don't even have anyone to sell your data to haha) - they are mostly interested in sensitive topics that will give them some valuable information, I think.

But I am in doubt that Russian domains are accepted everywhere - surely, some (probably, governmental or similar) websites will not allow you to register an account using a Russian email address.

[deleted] emember that you recommended a less secure and private email that uses FCM for notifications too and is based in Russia

That is patently FALSE. I would never recommend any such thing. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid BOTH FCM AND Russia.

d9780 The encryption happens ON THEIR SERVERS, therefore they have access to it before it is encrypted. Your security is not as strong as you believe it to be.

csis01 if I was target in France I would put my data in a country under embargo personally! I would leave it there.

              the postcard is the base.

it's a matter of jurisdiction, not encryption or whatever. which country gives what to whom..

Another vote for Proton Mail here, until I can get my own home server running NextCloud up and running.

I'm only concerned about Big Tech and Big Gov casually profiling me (traffic, MAID, etc) in order to steer and manipulate.
I'm no security/privacy guru, but from what I've put together, the absolute most private solution would be to stand up your own email server (NextCloud perhaps). Then access via VPN using a GOS device WITHOUT cellular service through a burner phone as hotspot/network connection that you trash periodically.
