There was recently here some discussion of DNS and so I started playing around with it on my Pixel 6a.
I am running a Pihole on my home network. In Settings --> Network & internet --> Internet --> MyWifi I select Settings, then Edit, I am able to manually set a DNS server for this wifi connection. Here, it reads "DNS 1 (unless overridden by Private DNS)." If I have Private DNS set to "off" then this wifi connection will indeed use my Pihole.
Private DNS must be set to "off" for my home wifi connection to use Pihole. Once I am on any data connection besides home wifi, I must manually enable Private DNS. This is not ideal for obvious reasons (for one, I'll never remember to set it).
In the spirit of experimentation, I began setting my Private DNS provider hostname to dns.adguard.com which works for any data connection I am connected to. I must say, I've found dns.adguard.com to be very effective and I'd be happy to use it exclusively instead of Pihole, but I wonder what the consensus is by the Gos community on this DNS provider.
I hate to leave the Pihole behind but I'm not interested in having to manually configure a DNS setting every time I leave my home network, and I'm also not interested in setting up a VPN into my home network while I'm outside of it.
Is there a way that I can more seamlessly use Pihole while on my home network and use Private DNS while I'm not? Is dns.adguard.com frowned-upon by the GoS community?
