This. Or other cloud options. Don't forget that Apple is an ecosystem. iPhone, iPad, Macbook, etc.
Google doesn't have any incentive to do this because there is no real "eco-system". If in any case they
make some "handy" service it will be to show you more ads, not because they are so nice and want to make
your life better. Apple is still a hardware company, mostly.

Nextcloud + Nextcloud Notes (or Quillpad). You can host Nextcloud yourself, or try something like disroot.org or adminforge.de.

I use Joplin to synchronise E2EE (!) GrapheneOS with macOS, iPadOS and Linux via my own Nextcloud. Simple webDAV would also be possible, as well as a few cloud services.

LeslieFH Maybe you already know this, but when you do that, I don't think your notes are end-to-end encrypted while syncing between devices. I'm not even sure Joplin has at rest encryption, by default. I think you have to enable that. Just FYI. I believe Joplin can be made secure, but it's not out of the box.

The advantage of Joplin, I believe, Joplin users can correct me, is that all the more sophisticated formatting and editing features are freely available. On Standard Notes and Notesnook they'll give you a free account for end-to-end encrypted syncing between devices. But you have to pay for editing and formatting features beyond basic text.

I've been using Standard Notes and am happy with it.
Notesnook also looks good. Notesnook also supports arm64 Windows devices, which is nice. Standard Notes has a 32-bit installer that works with emulation on Windows 10 arm64 devices.

I think these are the two easiest out of the box options, if you want end-to-end encrypted syncing between devices at no cost.

Joplin is nice, but encrypted syncing is more complicated, without a paid account.

trythis3 Hello: On Apple devices, like the Macbook Pro and an iPhone, notes can be written and edited on one device in their Notes app, eg on the iPhone, and that note and its edits shows immediately on the other device, eg the MacBook Pro. When switching to a GrapheneOS phone, is there a way to preserve this notes function between it and a Macbook Pro? Thanks for any ideas.

I use the OneNote (Android app) on GOS and the web client on Linux. When I used MacOS I used a commercial client called Outline.ws which supported syncing with OneNote, but I understand that now there's an official MacOS client too, or you could use the web version.

You can now (couldn't before) download .one files from Onedrive which can be opened in desktop versions of OneNote, to use as an offline backup.

OneNote supports pen annotations which many other notes apps don't.

I like using Markor on the Pixel 8 and Pixel Tablet sync'd to the Linux box over Syncthing, LAN-only. Markor can do txt, md, wikitxt, orgmode, others. On Linux I use nvim or, for wiki purposes zim-wiki.

I tried a lot of apps and ended up not liking Electron apps on desktop much at all including Joplin and many others.
