With standard usage, a cellular carrier knows where you live, where you work, how often you visit casinos and bars, when you sleep, and who you sleep with. And if a VPN is not in use the carrier knows which web sites you visit when (maybe it's OnlyFans...maybe while you're at work?).

DeletedUser443 I could possibly be thinking of running a sandboxed google play services unless I can run the couple of apps I have without it.

If Play and those apps are in a secondary user profile which is placed at rest when those apps are not in use that would cut down on whatever they might collect.

Someone (not reputable non tech person) told me that cell providers can listen in to any background conversation (microphone) from any phone they want to at anytime. E.g. listen to anything they want in background at any time even with no internet data turned on and no call in use.

Thoughts?

Before addressing that I think it's important for you to decide what sort of answer you would accept. The question of whether or not airplane mode really actually genuinely for-real turns the cellular modem off on GrapheneOS has arisen on the forum before, and some people have been both unwilling to accept information provided by the GrapheneOS project (meaning: software people) yet also unwillling to consult qualified hardware people (e.g., RF engineers). So this is maybe a bit of a sensitive topic.

The forum administrators take a dim view of alarmist claims that don't cite sources.

If somebody makes an alarmist claim about technology without providing any evidence, it might be best to ask that person what the evidence is. Of course it's fine to look around oneself to see if there is any evidence. But arguably posting the rumor before finding and assessing any evidence (for or against) acts to amplify the rumor. If it's false then amplifying it is negative.

Having learned the hard way about carrier locking, way back in the flip-phone days, I swore never again to buy from a carrier.

Verizon is likely the absolute worst.

Google Store or Best Buy.

Appreciate the response on it all and the links. I only asked as I was interested and I have never been able to find any info either way online over years so asked it here as i thought the answer might have been a yes or no type thing.

I also wrote it as a non technical person rumour for that exact reason to show that there was no proof and it was just heresay.

I'll be more careful on what I ask in future without specific sources though. Appreciate the heads up
