Yes. Probably. Letting it go to 100% (+ shield) allows the phone to calibrate. I had to do this twice on my device after which it went back to stopping at 80%. Though my last charge went back to 100% again. I'm waiting to do my next charge to see if it's still working.

Mine has charged to 100% quite a few times in a row now in spite of the 80% limit enabled.

krysor Same issue here. I followed advice on the forum to let it charge to 100% and leave it plugged in for a couple of hours, but it still almost always charges to 100%.

Not sure what the issue is but I assume it's an upstream AOSP bug.

krysor while it is possible that there is some bug you're experiencing, I find it more likely that your battery still hasn't fully re-calibrated itself in a long time. My suggestion would be to plug it in at night and when you wake up check if it has reached 100%+Shield.

I have a Pixel 8a as well and just this week had it charge to 100% +Shield and successfully re-calibrate. It's plugged in right now and is showing 80%+Shield as it should.

It works on Pixel 7. The option only shows up in settings of Owner profile for me.

I am still experiencing issues with it not stopping at 100%. I've been playing around a little and what I am seeing.

It will charge to 100% and after a little time the shield appears.
if I use the phone while 100% + shield it will slowly drop to 80%, this seems to indicate that at least it is not passing a charge.
once it has dropped to 80%+shileld it stays there.
I can unplug charger and let phone drop a few percent. when plugging it back in it will stop at 80%.
I can switch user profiles while plugged in and the shield remains and will also try drop to 80% if phone is used after it hits 100%

But this typically is a once off. Issues I am seeing.

If the phone is set to idle reboot while plugged in, based on above, while it is in BFU it will charge to 100% and not get a shield until you unlock and wait a while. This was not the case from I think roughly September and earlier.
This I have not fully confirmed but It seems that if you do the above 100% to 80% and take it off charge for a long period of time, I think it looks like it goes back up to the 100%

This is all on a Pixel 8a with the most recent updates.

Do you mean that it charges past 100% to 101+%? or did you intend to write 80%?

From my observations, this is how it is supposed to work.

This feature is useless on my P7 Pro because after each restart it forgets to stop at 80%. Is it possible to make it somehow more permanent? I mean to choose to only charge to 100% monthly or so?

Zoltan if you read the description of the feature in Settings > Battery > Charging optimization it says

Your phone will charge to 100% once every one to two weeks to maintain battery level reporting accuracy

userofgos Ok, let me be more specific. I charge to 100% (shield appears) and then I restart and it won't stop anymore at 80%. This happens not after one or two weeks, but after each update or for any reason I restart the phone. The description is simply NOT true!

Yes that was my bad, I meant stop at 80%. It goes to 100% at least after a restart and will drop down to 80% if I use the phone while it is plugged in and then stay there.

@userofgos I think users in this thread including myself find that lately with battery optimization, the phone sometimes stops charging at 80%. At least for me on my Pixel 7 Pro, it almost always charges to 100% even after keeping it plugged in for hours after reaching 100% with the shield icon appearing. Locked or unlocked, secondary or main profile; neither made any apparent difference.

Since me and other users reported experiencing this issue after an earlier release, I think it's unlikely that all of us are erroneously using this feature or have a hardware issue. I don't know what the problem is so hopefully @GrapheneOS or the mods could shed some light.

This is a good clarification. Some of the comments on this thread have provided limited and/or unclear details as to the exact issues they are facing. Others are either new to the forum and/or are unaware of what Charging Optimization looks like when it is functioning properly.

I mean well when commenting on this thread, and hope to help others debug whether it is actually an actual bug/glitch or user error.

Sometimes we abuse our devices battery. I've had a number of moments where I doom scrolled instagram reels or youtube videos late at night draining my battery to 1% consistently for multiple nights in a row - causing my Pixel 8a to shutdown in the middle of a video. As a result I experienced the infamous bootloop issue when plugging my phone into the charger (new threads are created almost daily about this issue which is resolved by pausing at yellow boot)

I'm quite certain that was why it took so long for my battery to recalibrate to 100% + Shield the next time Charging optimization kicked in.

I just charged my phone to 80% + Shield, restarted (keeping it plugged in), and did not unlock the phone keeping in BFU (Before First Unlock) - It charged past 80% with no shield, and is still charging.

I'm not sure if it is the intended design, upstream or GrapheneOS bug, or a limitation of what can be done BFU.

Other known instances where it charges to 100%:

If you have your phone plugged in and you turn it off, it will charge to 100%
If you plug your phone in and you turn it off after it finishes booting, it will charge to 100%
If you boot into the Yellow Boot screen and pause there with it plugged in, it will charge to 100%

Update: It charged to fully 100% and still showed no shield (even after waiting 30 minutes). I unplugged my Pixel 8a, rebooted, unlocked and then plugged it back in and immediately the Shield icon showed next to 100%.

I've let mine charge to 100 overnight and still don't get the shield icon anymore

The current (since Android 16) implementation is that it charges to 100% after boot. Then goes down to 80 even when on a charger. After that it keeps to 80. To summarize, it's probably intended in AOSP. GOS makes no changes to this.

23Sha-ger that would explain why i havent seen mine charge to 100 since android 16. i charge it overnight so itd be back to 80 by then
