I'm unfortunately forced to use WhatsApp for school, my club and more. I put WhatsApp in a work profile with Mullvad VPN always on. Is it useful to use a VPN with WhatsApp so they can't log my IP or does it even matter? Either way I blocked background usage so I will only open it when I'm at home
WhatsApp with VPN safe?
Given all the personal data Meta collects, trying to protect your IP address is the bare minimum, and in most cases it's better to use a PVN.
Stewart Yeah but I read the Privacy Policy today and its not "that" bad. They mostly just
- store messages "temporarily" (according to them, but either way I have to live with it),
- view saved contacts (I donts save contacts because they are all on WhatsApp and I can recognize the profile pictures)
- store "Device And Connection Information" which includes IP, general location and more. If they dont take this information its not that bad and I can live with it.
DeletedUser218 Storing messages doesn't matter since they are e2e encrypted anyway. Rummaging through your contacts list allows them to see all your acquaintances, their phones, e-mails, addresses, bday etc. Basically all info you keep in contacts. This is where Contact Scopes feature comes very handy. The sad reality is even if you don't save contacts, other people will have your data saved in their contacts for Meta to fish. Other than that, Meta also stores your standard billing data, who communicated with whom, when etc.
