Emoticon responses to text messages

With my old phones ios and android -- i could respond to a message with an emoticon. Similar to how Signal allows emoji responses. The response is directly connected to a post, and can be responded to even after the conversation has moved passed it. Currently I can only send emojis as separate messages in chronological sequence.
Is it possible to have the GrapheneOS messaging app do the same? Is there a toggle or setting I'm missing?

Not possible in the default Messaging app.

A more private way to get this feature would be to switch to an app like Signal.

One way to activate the carriage return key on the AOSP keyboard is to tap the shift key on the left hand side of the keyboard, this will temporarily change the emoji key on the right side of the keyboard to the return key
