Pixel 8 too bright screen

Hi. Recently shiftet from the excellent pixel 5 cause it died out of nowhere. Would not turn on at the end. Went out and got a pixel 8 instead and quickly set up GOS like on the good ol p5.

Everythings works the same but i am quite annoyed by the fact that the lowest brightness is vastly higher than on the p5. So when reading in the dark, i am far more blinded than before.

I have set brightness to lowest value and have set up "extra dim" as well. But the darkest is way brighter than on my old device. It also seems like the dark mode is much more grey than black on android 15?

Anyways, any other p8 users out there having any luck turning the screen darker? And is it a value that GOS could configure/modify?

Have you tried enabling night light with the highest intensity? This plus extra dim (lowest intensity) and lowest brightness is so dark i almost can't make stuff out on my screen at night

For me its way way too bright, even with all the things you mention. I have all the exact same settings as I did on the p5. But the screens and/or default minimum brightness are way different, which seems peculiar to me.

But it does not seem others see it this way? I just thought the idea om OLED was that black would always be black.

Onlyfun could end up being needed, yes. But hoping for a software solution, since the phone uses an OLED screen.

bonsaidinghy sure, both dark theme, the extra dim feature (which does not make much difference on the 8) and at night, the night light.

But i guess its just me. Anyways, thanks all for suggestions

Duckduck Make sure you also configured "Extra dim" intensity in accessibility settings. According to news, Google is planning to remove "Extra dim" feature and instead make the screen even dimmer on the lowest brightness level, so maybe that will help as well.

I noticed something similar when upgrading from a Pixel 5 to Pixel 8. The "black" background colors on the 8 seem more like a gray than the true black colors on the 5. They were both running the latest version of Android 14 at the time, and adjusting the brightness, Material You colors, or Extra Dim setting didn't account for the difference. I eventually got used to the lighter colors but I did prefer the darker look on the 5. I'm not sure if it's a software difference or the hardware.

calpurtmun i came to gos on p5 from sam s20 and I clearly remember screen downgrade which is still the case with p8. Pixel's hardware is forever behind.

As for black not really being black might be an issue of the user falsely expecting a "dark" theme to be "black" as I can not find an option in pixel settings for a "black" or "oled" theme, only dark. On the other hand some apps provide such options, and when chosen my p8 perfectly makes the true black where designed by those apps. So for this one it sounds more like a feature request that should be addressed to gos devs as an additional theme option.

Onlyfun it could be a feature request yes. But i first wanted to know if this was a thing not only i experienced. Guess not. For now i conclude that the p8 darkest is much brighter than on the p5. But also notice this could change if android tweaks this setting in the future

I'm using a pixel8 pro and everything works fine, I can go from extremely bright to darkness using the slider. I sympathize with your problem though reading at night with bright screen is a real bummer.

I have P8P. When I use lowest brightness and extra dim at lowest settings, at night it's visible, but I never felt that I want go any lower. When added night light, it's unreadable for me. I would be nice if extra dim would disappear and replaced by lowering the lowest brightness settings. Overall I'm satisfied with range of brightness.

BRNko i think that the screens might be different. Yours sounds like my ol p5 was, the p8 is different. I tested the p8p and p9 in store and found this.
