i currently use tibor kaputa app for sms. is it the best option?
tnx

so many responses that don't go straight to the answer.
    i'm dazzled by the amount.
    but thanks for the links.....
it's like finding a needle for me an a hay pile

i guess i will stick to tibor kaputa's app

lovefromisrael I'm sticking with the default SMS application because I hardly ever send SMS, but if you use SMS much more often than I do, QUIK is a fork of QKSMS that's been discontinued and that's probably what I'd use if I used SMS a lot.

Note that you could perhaps run RCS with opportunistic E2EE on Google Messages, I don't guarantee the result because there are compatibility issues on GrapheneOS that didn't exist before.

[deleted] tbf: the question is for the best - not the most secure.
And isn't h crux with SMS that it is basically never secure and no app will change it?

That's why I don't bother to get a new app for it.
But why is it the most "secure"? I'm curious

lovefromisrael who can tell for certain? But so far I'm not aware of any "bell ringing" of it being the opposite.

I personally also use some of the "fossify" apps - but only those that can be used local without any connection.

In general fdroid is "safe" but has risks - especially if you add repos. - I'm sure someone will/can link the blog post about that topic.

lovefromisrael i use a lot of his apps from fdroid. is that safe?

To be fair, Tibor's original apps (SimpleMobileTools) are only unsafe to use if you've installed them from Google Play, as that is where they are continuing to be updated by ZipoApps and are riddled with ads. The apps from Github / Fdroid are still "fine".

But there isn't really a reason to still use the SimpleMobileTool apps (from Fdroid) though, as you can get new features and things from the Fossify apps instead (Fossify are developed by Naveen who was involved with SimpleMobileTools by the way).

ILIKETRAINS I personally also use some of the "fossify" apps - but only those that can be used local without any connection.

Are there any Fossify apps that have network connection?

I'm sure someone will/can link the blog post about that topic.

"Are there any Fossify apps that have network connection?"

actually... no. I don't think so. But I'm not sure. More a "out of reflex statement. " Since I use this approach for every app as long it's possible/feasible.
(But even have as standard browser a browser with no network permission, so no app without network permission can exploit the browser connection)

ILIKETRAINS How would you point to the "best" of anything? If security matters to you (youre using grapheneOS so it probably does) then the default app is the "best". If you want extra features for a technlogy that should be avoided at all costs (SMS) then by all means make it even more insecure to remote exploitation by adding extra attack surface and worse code quality than the AOSP one by using a third party app.

One user might want one or the other, there is no "best" option.
But i personally would discourage anyone from using anything but the stock app for security reasons.

Google Messages would probably be another fairly secure option. Up to you guys. Its still worse than aosp.
