I'm not sure I understand. Yes, FUTO publishes their code on Github (and Gitlab). I'm guessing you want to use Obtainium to install from Github? You won't be able to do this because FUTO do not publish APKs on their code repositories. But if you use the instructions in my previous comment, you can install Grayjay using their Fdroid repo (which Obtainium is able to do). This doesn't require or involve Fdroid itself in any way.

Scatterbrain you can download the APK from grayjay.app and then the app will tell you when it needs updates and prompt for them. You can also manually check for them in the settings.

Correct me if I am wrong (I often am so I mean it!) but what I think I have learned from more knowledgeable GOS team members is...

Getting code from Aurora and Fdroid is not recommended, security risks due to the lack of moderation/vetting of the code (Fdroid mainly).

So when I installed Obtainium I did not tick Fdroid options, only github, thinking that ensures my code isn't coming from some possibly insecure repo, but direct from the creator. Am I wrong there?

"Tick Fdroid options"? What do you mean by this? What options?

The "Source URL" and "Override Source" mentioned in my instructions ensure that the app is being installed from the creator's own repo (hence the "third party" repo) These repos are designed for Fdroid by can also be used by Obtainium (both the Official Fdroid and Third-Party Fdroid repos). The app comes direct from the creator (in this case, FUTO) if you install according to the instructions I gave.

By "Tick Fdroid Options" I was referring to the screen you get after first installing Obtainium, it has tick boxes where you want it to grab apk's from. I only ticked github as I thought ticking Fdroid will leave me open to the same security flaws of installing via Droidify (as I used to do).

From what you said above it sounds like I was indeed wrong, and that's not the case.

So just to confirm, are you saying that if I let Obtainium install apk's from fdroid repo, that's different than installing that same app from Froid via the Fdroid or Droidify apps?

Scatterbrain Basically, GrayJay has its own comments section for videos. When you post a comment on a video on GrayJay, it's not joining in with the rest of the comments on YouTube, it's going in it's own comments section that's only populated by other GrayJay users. I may have gotten the specifics a bit wrong, but that's my understanding of how it works.

When you make a comment, below the text is the row of icons. Highlight a word (or words) in your comment and tap the chain link icon (in between the </> and the image icon). It should produce [example](https://). Then replace the https:// in brackets with your URL, so that "example" becomes a link when you post.

Scatterbrain The app auto prompts for updates when they're available since it's a network connected app by it's nature.

Dumdum I found your post, followed your instructions (using Obtainium) and successfully installed Grayjay. Thank you for this.

However, I noticed the app updates itself and Obtainium now shows version 264 installed but version 253 as the latest. Does the Grayjay repo no longer receive updates? Is this normal? Should I remove it from Obtainium and rely on the app itself for updates?

I wouldn't know, that would be a question for the FUTO devs.

Its up to you. I suppose if the app updates itself, then there's probably no need for Obtainium in that case.

[deleted] I've used both but when Google screwed over third party YouTube apps recently I tried grayjay because there were like one of the only options that managed to evade whatever Google did behind the scenes to break functionality for third party YouTube apps and I liked it so much I stuck with it.

For me the biggest reasons I love it are the great functionality/UI
And that you can use it to watch content from other platforms like rumble, twitch etc. it's nice having all that content in one place.

I'm sticking with it for the foreseeable future. To me it's just a better product all around than most of the other alternatives.

xarexyouxmadx It's a great app, but unfortunately will not install on a Nvidia Shield Pro, despite being android, and casting is such a silly waste of resources
