NewPipe vs Grayjay?

[deleted] I've used both but when Google screwed over third party YouTube apps recently I tried grayjay because there were like one of the only options that managed to evade whatever Google did behind the scenes to break functionality for third party YouTube apps and I liked it so much I stuck with it.

For me the biggest reasons I love it are the great functionality/UI
And that you can use it to watch content from other platforms like rumble, twitch etc. it's nice having all that content in one place.

I'm sticking with it for the foreseeable future. To me it's just a better product all around than most of the other alternatives.

[deleted] Libretube is using Piped proxy. Tubular and Newpipe don't. I consider Libretube as a more private app. Also there's an option to not use Piped proxy. With this option Libretube will become Tubular with better design in terms of privacy.

Worst part of Libretube for me (by far) is the downright atrocious decision to restrict downloads to in-app only. No downloading to phone storage. Deal breaker for me. Until they fix that, Libretube will only ever be a backup to watch videos when Tubular doesn't work.

I also prefer Tubular's comment section. Libretube copies the official Youtube design (I believe?) of having the "Comments" button which shows a pop-up comment tab. Tubular's sliding tab design (comments/next videos/description/sponsorblock) is better IMO.

LibreTube is actually pretty good, but because of the Piped proxy, it is very unreliable for me for where I am. I'm trying Grayjay now, and from what I've read, the privacy policy looks to be a lot more private with it compared to NewPipe. I'm open to be corrected with that if I'm wrong.

whiskeywalrus interesting question. I live in a place where YouTube applies geo restrictions to content. I just installed Tubular with USA VPN enabled and went right to Nicki Minaj channel. Tubular shows me less and dated videos despite the VPN. Why and how? Who knows maybe someone can explain. But if geo blocking doesn't affect you, it might not be a problem. nvm I cleared cache and it works as expected

Brave browser with bookmarks in a YouTube bookmark folder for an alternative to subscribing. VPN at all times. No adds, no log-in, reliable etc.

I got sick of the unreliability of YouTube front ends.

GreyJay works but the UI is bad IMO.

If you didn't know already, you could try using RSS feeds for channels. I tested this with Feeder and it works by simply copy-pasting any YT channel (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/thedailyshow). You may prefer this to Bookmarks, since it allows you to have notifications for updates.

Because its only benefit is Niconico and Bilibili, no? That's not relevant to people who just want/care about Youtube, like me. Maybe I'm wrong and PipePipe has other features/benefits.

If you dont want to suck Piped resources all the time, Newpipe, Grayjay, Freetube are the only good options.

Grayjay has very fast updates and supports many problems. It has plugins, which are updated very frequently.

Newpipe is way smaller and more minimalist, Grayjay works better.

I prefer LibreTube. Its UI is closer to stock YouTube, which I prefer, and it's more private than NewPipe (I can't comment on GrayJay's privacy). NewPipe and its forks are fine, I just find the UI and certain other functions clunky in comparison to LibreTube. GrayJay is also fine but I find it to be bloated with features that I have no use for, and getting it to function how I'd like is kind of a pain. All are valid options, though.

I do a lot of youtube watching. I am yet to see Libretube work once. Clipious (in Accrescent) was installed and then uninstalled, totally broken. I have always used Newpipe, but moved to Tubular for sponsorblock feature. trouble is, the constant breakages of Tubular and Newpipe make it tempting to go back to Newpipe and suffer the sponsors, as Tubular seems to take a lot longer to fix and update when needed.
I have never even heard of grayjay, must take a look. How is best to install it on Graphene?

Scatterbrain If LibreTube is crummy for you, you can turn off the Piped Proxy so that it pulls directly from YouTube just like NewPipe does. It also has Sponsorblock, so it might be more tolerable than base Newpipe.
As for GrayJay, I installed it through the FUTO repo on F-Droid.

Dumdum I found your post, followed your instructions (using Obtainium) and successfully installed Grayjay. Thank you for this.

However, I noticed the app updates itself and Obtainium now shows version 264 installed but version 253 as the latest. Does the Grayjay repo no longer receive updates? Is this normal? Should I remove it from Obtainium and rely on the app itself for updates?
